Beginner with black and white/grey smoke

Hi this is my first post and on reading through some of the problems people have was hoping someone may help may be able to help i bought a 2012 fiat ducato 2.3 m130 multijet (for campervan conversion) after i bought he van i noticed a leak of oil and when travelling down the motorway black smoke

so the turbo charger was renewed as the oil seemed to be coming from the oil feed pipe also after removing the turbo the fins inside were loose so renewed turbo and pipes oil stopped leaking , the van now starts ok drives like a rocket, but on startup i get thick white/grey smoke sometimes clears then i take on a run and black smoke when changing gear, have cleaned air intake renewed the broken i thinks its a air sensor (bosch on air intake) renewed air filter and cleaned pipe, cleaned the egr cooler and pipes and checked egr working( + &- to battery valve opens and closes)

now when i unplugged the mass air flow meter below the air filter engine starts no smoke (grey/white) and when i take out for a run theres no black smoke,

so renewed bosch mass air filter (0281006048) and it made no difference

so unplugged again the van started took for run again no smoke ran like a rocket, so left unplugged

i went to start it today and lumpy start and no throttle plugged sensor in starts with grey/white smoke and full throttle again,

all the throttle body was removed and cleaned when turbo was replaced and flap seems to move ok

so any ideas please.please. without going to dealer for plug in

Hi the van only has 106,000 regular service but maybe been only driven short journeys as previouse mots show only 15 -18 thousand a year and last year about 25,000 i have tried a cheap plug in scanner thing and that confirms when i unplug mass/map sensor also says dpf filter code and one for dpf pending will get it scanned again tonight (after work) and put codes up i did notice NO engine managment light comes on no matter whats unplugged??

thanks for the replies

Hi everyone update

i have a creader 3001 scanner thing now when plugged in and mass air flow unplugged reads 6 codes

1, p2002 generic current diesel particulate filter below threshold bank 1

2, p0100 generic current mass or air flow circuit

3, p2002 generic current diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold bank 1

4, p2002 generic pending diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold bank 1

5 p2002 generic pending diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold bank 1

6. p0100 generic pending mass or volume air flow a circuit

now i clear all codes replug in the mass sensor and engine starts but white/grey smoke and if i took for a run would probably get the black smoke when changing gear,

i unplug the mass sensor again and engine starts lumpy this time with no throttle

:-( :-( :-(

Hi Mike

i think i found it if its the bosch sensor that goes on top of the intake manifold that has a little cage thing round two wires yes that was damaged ( practlcally missing the cage thing and just could just see the wires) and a new bosch one put in when all that was taken off and cleaned and put back.

Hello, I have answered your email before seeing this here.

I assumed that this was a Euro 4 engine but your references to your diagnostic findings mentions a diesel particulate filter more than once. As a Euro 4 would not have such a device i now wonder if you actually have an early Euro 5? This being the case my advice is not going to be correct.

These symptoms when looking at a Euro 4 suggest that the throttle body and solenoid valve are defective. If the vehicle is a Euro 5 it is most likely that you have one or more defective injectors and the first thing to do would be to get an injector leak-off test carried out.

Trying to cover all of the bases here in one hit!

I will look back here again later today.

You would have to spend £60 or so to buy a kit and while it is not difficult to carry out, you would need a pipe clamp and a few other bits too, there is a risk of damaging the leak-off connectors and it can get messy so i would recommend that for about £100 it would be worth getting a diesel injection specialist to do it. Removing and replacing injectors is often not easy so i would recommend that this be carried out somewhere where all possible outcomes can be accommodated as well.

While a leak-off test identifies excessive leak-off, it cannot diagnose over fuelling. In the majority of cases where one or more fails the leak-off test and is replaced; this will solve all current symptoms but some times injectors that pass this test have other issues and the problem may persist. Most specialists will tend to recommend replacing all 4 injectors and while this is not always strictly necessary and increases the risk of one of them being difficult to get out, it does at least, in theory, mean that all are free from faults and should be reliable for some time to come but these things do not come cheap and it can seem like over-kill.

Hi update

prior to leak off test garage has advised me that the dpf filter may have been removed as there is welding around it, and the engine managment light may have been cut out (they think its a diode type not bulb) as it does not light up as soon as ignition is on, and thats why it does not light up if anything is unplugged ie: maf sensor or egr valve ect, and could have been i think he said remapped so ecu thinks theres not one (dpf)

so i have not had the leak off performed as yet.

would this make the smoke white/grey on start up plus black smoke when changing gear,

and would just renewing the dpf cure it as there not cheap???

  • 2 weeks later...

update to last email, first i would like to say thankyou to nick

also to everyone with suggestions,

i booked van into diesel specialist and told them about the white/grey smoke on start up and black

when driven and changing gear and asked them to do a leak off test.

they said well we will put the diagnostics on it first then go from there.

a day and a half latter i went to collect the van and they said about the dpf filter ect and that it could be

opening a can of worms and that replacing that then it could be dpf sensors and pipes and then they thought it could be the egr

i asked if they had done a leak off test and they said after the test run they dont think its injector problem as it runs to well

so i said so you did not do a leak off test and they said no (micky mouse garages down here)

anyway i got the van back last thursday and ordered from amazon a cheap leak of test kit ( red case one £25) my son said he will

come down on monday and we will do it then,

i got the kit today and first we did the listen to each injector (long screwdriver and listened) all 4 injectors making same noise

then we tried (engine running) unplug each injector one at a time same change of engine to each 4 injectors.

Then we tried the leak off kit

No 4 filled the bottle to 3/4 full in around 15-20 seconds

No 2 filled the bottle to 1/2 full after 25 seconds

No 3 filled the bottle to just under 1/4 in 25-30 seconds

No 1 filled a few mill in the 30 seconds

tried this test 3 times and all with similar results

so nick you were bang on the money with injectors looks like i need 4 injectors

next do i get reconditioned injectors, brand new ones, or have mine reconditioned,

also are they coded so if mine are reconditioned do i have to have them recoded or can they go back in

after reconditioning in same order,

if they dont need recoding i was going to get engine hot try and undo bolts and see if injectors come out if they are tight screw bolts back in not tight, then crank engine to pop them up then take them out,

this is only if they dont need recoding as i will have to try and find a garage that will do the job,

also any pointers as to where i might get the injectors at reasonable cost.

now as the diagnostics is showing dpf fault i am assuming this has not been deleted from the ecu so reinstating a dpf filter thats not been tampered with (second hand) is all that is needed

also a place near me CARTRONIX (in waterloovile in hampshire) will reinstate the dash for £150 inc vat and can do it while u wait or a postal service

apparently very good thats all they do is dashes when pixels go ect

thanks all mick

Hi Mick I can’t help you with your questions but I’ve read that some owners and garages have had trouble with the Ducato injectors breaking off and causing major problems. If I were you I would soak around the injectors with plus gas for a few days before attempting to remove them.

John.
