Boring battery stuff

Starter battery has given up the ghost, was dead flat at the weekend so put it on charge and its still only 12.2V so it's time to replace it. Peugeot spec is L5 950amp, 95Ah. Peugeot dealer wants £250, local battery specialist want £138 with 3 yr warranty and Go outdoors are offering a 95Ah leisure battery for £84.

Is a leisure battery OK to use as a starter battery?

The solar panel only charges the habi battery so I plan to fit a CTEK charger that will be on whenever I'm on EHU which is always when it's at home.

Any thoughts or adviceplease chaps?.

No - leisure batteries are designed to give low current for a long time whereas starter batteries are designed to give very high current for a short time when cranking the engine. They have different construction characteristics as a result. I would do some googling as you should be able to get a decent starter battery for about £100 or less I would think.

I’m not sure what the “L5” designator signifies, but assuming that Peuget will have fitted to your 2017 Boxer the same battery as Fiat would have to a 2017 Ducato, your original battery may well be made by the Italian company FIAMM and - if a like-for-like FIAMM replacement were fitted - the cost would indeed be very high.

The dimensions of your battery will be Length=353mm x Width=175mm x Height=190mm

For leisure-battery usage, the late Allan Evans’s website makes the following suggestions

The Varta LFD/Bosch L range is our "Best Budget Buy". Guide price £105 for 90Ah from Alpha Batteries.

The Yuasa L36-EFB is our "Best Mid range" battery. Guide price £119 for 100Ah from Alpha Batteries.

Both of these are ‘dual purpose’ in that they are suitable for engine-starting as well as having a reasonable degree of ‘deep cycling’ capability. Allan felt that, as many motorhomes stood unused for extended periods, this type of battery’s ability to hold charge might be preferable for starting purposes.

However, if you’d prefer to have a dedicated starter battery (and I probably would) Varta’s Silver Dynamic H3

https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/varta-silver-dynamic-h3-car-battery/

or the equivalent Bosch S5 103

https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/s5-013-bosch-car-battery-12v-100ah-type-019-s5013/

should be an excellent choice.

Don’t pay £250 unless the battery being offered by the Peugeot dealer is made of solid gold, and be very wary of the £84 'leisure-battery' from Go Outdoors as it’s most unlikely to be suitable (If the price really really tempts you, you better make damn sure you know EXACTLY what battery Go Outdoors is offering you).

The local battery specialist’s £138/3yr warranty quote isn’t extortionate, but (once again) you should confirm EXACTLY what you’d be getting and, in any case, the Varta/Bosch batteries are less expensive.

Will you be installing the new battery yourself?

Whoever does it, this recent discussion should be of interest:

As well as what Derek has posted I would look at Exide Premium offering.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ea1000/

Looks like a very good price for a high spec battery, and probably is closer to the original battery.

The Peugeot spec L5 probably is case size LO5 which is L353 x W175 x H190mm.

The Exide above is 100 Ah CCA 900Amps.

Varta Silver , Bosch S5, Yuasa YBX5000 series, Exide Premium - you cannot go far wrong as all excellent batteries.

Thanks all for your advice. In the end I went with Alpha batteries, Tayna and Battery Megastore couldn't identify which battery I needed. Bought 100Ah one for £95 inc delivery and VAT with a five year warranty/ Lets hope it dies after 4 and a half *-)

Again, thanks
