C1 Licence Entitlement

Hi, I'm sure this subject has been aired before but can members advise on "current" DVLA regulations please?

I'm considering purchasing a M/H heavier than 3500kgs. At present I'm 76 and hold a UK licence entitling me to drive vehicles up to 3500kgs. (B Cat) How do I reinstate my C1 entitlement, lost at 70, on my licence? Is it just a matter of filling in a D2 form and getting a medical? Thanks for any advice.

Although it’s a 2016 entry, this Practical Caravan thread should still be relevant

https://forums.practicalcaravan.com/threads/lost-c1-when-over-70-can-it-be-reinstated.59494/

There’s also this more recent O&AL forum thread that touches on the subject

and a GOOGLE-search on "reinstating C1 entitlement” retrieves more online discussion.

This 19 August article mentioned driving licence renewal long delays.

It’s perhaps stating the obvious, but reinstating a C1 entitlement is not the same as renewing a C1 entitlement and, although the DVLA is comfortable in the latter case for people to continue to drive 3500+kg vehicles while their C1 renewal application is being processed, that won’t be the case where reinstatement is concerned.

I’d also question the logic of choosing to purchase a 3500+kg motorhome at age 76 (i’m 77 incidentally) as, although a person might meet the medical requirements that would allow a C1 entitlement to be reinstated, there are plenty of relatively minor medical problems that could occur without warning soon after that would bar a driver from continuing to retain the C1 entitlement.

The scope of the medical examination will be evident from the following links

If a driver who has allowed his/her C1 entitlement to lapse at age 70 cannot meet the standards that the examination/report covers, the C1 entitlement will not be reinstated as a matter of course.

This recent-ish forum discussion may still be of interest
