Planning to go to Corsica May/June. Is it possible to turn up at the port and get on a ferry easily, or does pre booking make it cheaper? Any Corsica sites recommended? (Quite/nice location/clean toilets etc!)

We went to Corsica in April 2001 with a motorhome and wild camped for two weeks. A really beautiful, unspoilt island, saved from the promotors by the gun toting mafioso/nationalists (usually, they shoot at each other) who are also handy with sticks of dynamite. (one just finished development got blown up earlier this week) . We took Marseille - Ajaccio then all the north of the island - Cap Corse, Bastia, Calvi, etc. We never experienced any problems but have heard stories of stonings of vehicles and smashed windscreens(especially at Corte). In retrospect, I'd say it's probably best to use official sites. Prices of everything are higher than in France. The road signs are either full of shotgun holes or removed by the nationalists. www.corsicaferries.com and www.sncm.fr are the two main ferry companies. Ask for special offers. It's cheaper to book in advance. Ferry crossings can be 'lurchy' if the 'mistral' is blowing. Ask for the most recent ferryboat. Take a day to discover Marselles.

There's some Corsica-related information on the www.campingcar-infos.com website. As Tony says, Corsica has a mixed reputation regarding motorcaravanning with plenty of negative (and the odd positive) letters in French motorhome magazines. In fact, I note there's a strong 'don't bother' comment on the above website.

If you hang around outside a pub at closing time in Blackpool I imagine it would be 100% more dangerous than exploring Corsica. Wherever you go it's obviously better to be informed than ignorant of the prevailing political or social situation. There is a resentment shown towards camping cars by the Corsicans. We were lucky (and we travelled out of season) but the french camping car mags frequently relate window smashing and verbal abuse towards our vehicles. However, they also frequently go in for the same sort of behaviour amongst themselves (leaving dead bodies and burnt out buildings) so perhaps we are wrong to take it personally.
