Engine fault with Bustner Aviano Fiat Ducato 2300 multi jet

Hi my motorhome a Burstner Aviano 2300 multi jet year 2000 and has done 12700 miles has incurred an engine fault. It has not been used for 7 months other than stating up an moving it to a different position on the drive. 6weeks ago drove it to the garage for a MOT drove with no problems. 2 weeks later load up for a trip to Fance we only got a though hundred yards when the engine cut out the engine restarted no problem went a few yard and cut out again. I managed to let back to my drive and parked up where the engine would tick over and then start to die and then pick up again only when I attempted to drive it would cut out. It was taken to a garage where it has been since. The fuel filter has been change as well as the fuel drained and replaced. The engine management unit would not talk to the computer and was sent away to a specialist but it showed to be fine. When it cuts out nearly al the warning lights come on even the temp gauge goes high. The Machanic is near his wits end has any one have any ideas that may help.

Year 2000?

It sounds like it's never moved for lots of it's life.

The two common faults with later models are water dripping onto the ecu, corroding the connections, and the earth strap corroding internally so that it looks OK but doesn't earth properly.

The fuel filter rarely seals properly after unscrewing to put a new filter in.

You are correct about the seal on the fuel filter, after fitting a new filter it was found to be leaking fuel. That has now been corrected. I will speak with the Machanic regarding the earthing suggestion but I would expect after all the electrical tests he has carried out he would have checked that, but some time you just don't look for obvious . Thank you for your contribution.

2010 makes a lot more sense!

Go straight to 'rusty junction'!

 

There is a blue connector underneath the fuse box where gremlins such as this reside. First you check the earth strap above the gearbox at both ends for security and being clean, then possibly add another to be sure. Then look at the connectors under the fuse box. If that is not it there may well be a fault in the wiring loom in the vicinity of the fuse box. These are all very common issues from 2006 to 2011 and beyond.

Thank you for comments we have checked the blue connection and that is fine, we are now nearly through the complete loam. The Machanic is now thinking it could be a faulty engine management unit. Hopefully he sort it before the summers over !!!

The best way to check for the earth fault that does plague these vehicles is to get one half of a pair of jump leads and attach one end to the engine lifting eye and the other to the earth stud to the right hand side of the top of the grille, or if you need to drive the vehicle to provoke a problem; attach this end to the fuel filter mounting bracket or other solid earth on the bodywork.
