Festival of the Sea, Portsmouth

We had planned to go to the Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth at the end of June. For the past 4 years we have visited the Kite Festival on Southsea Common for the duration of the August Bank Holiday. We stayed on Southsea Common and because there were numerous other Motohomes we never minded going off for a day into Portsmouth and leaving ours. We are not sure whether Southsea Common is available throughout the year to stay overnight.... does anybody know? Or does anybody know a safe place to park for the day and a site to stay overnight? We looked at Southsea Leisure Park and it was not pleasant, gravel pitches and no staff to be seen anywhere. We left our Motorhome parked on the busy road Weymouth Prom 200 yards from shopping centre for about 2 hours and somebody had broken our deadlock apparently trying to break in. Many Thanks in advance
