Flashing Oil Warning Light

Just back from a short trip away. During the trip my oil warning light (2012 Citroen Relay 2.2 130bhp Euro 5) came on flashing. Hand book says that that indicates degradation of engine oil and vehicle should be booked in for an oil service otherwise engine may go into limp mode. Full service filters and oil change was actually carried out in early April about 750 miles ago so unlikely that oil is actually "expired".

Coincidentally I was within 5 miles of a friends garage (non franchised) when this happened and his mechanic put his generic Snap-On computer on the engine which confirmed that oil pressure was OK. There is plenty oil and no obvious leaks so wonder if it is a faulty connection faulty sensor or associated with resetting the vehicle computer after the last service.

I don't use my local Citroen dealer for "historical" reasons but interested to hear if anyone has come across this problem.

My work van did the same thing about a month ago I knew that the oil was OK as I had just changed it three weeks earlier and it was the proper grade as I am the firms mechanic I put it on the snap on system when I got back to the workshop and that is also what it came up with as I knew all was ok I didn't belet they fault to see what happened and three days later it went out itself and hasn't appeared since

Morning, I had the same problem with my Peugeot 2.2 -- I knew the oil level was ok so I let it flash away ! that was about 8/9 months ago. was told it was an electric fault so I don't worry about it --it will flash for about 30 seconds on start-up then goes out. :D

On Euro 5 Engines, it is possible that, if the DPF does not complete the cleaning cycle that the engine oil will eventually become contaminated with fuel. Whilst your problem may be diagnosed an electrical fault, this may not always be the case, an indicator of fuel contamination would be an increase in oil level however, if your vehicle has an electronic display of oil level it would not show this. Best to check the dipstick.

Thanks for comments. Took van to a specialist dealer today. They were able to reset the computer and to confirm that all is otherwise in order. They did initially speculate (before investigation) that problem could be associated with regeneration but that appears not to be the case. Modest charge so very pleased it seems to be resolved.

When an oil service is carried out it is necessary to reset TWO areas of the ECU. The first is the normal oil service light and the other is the Oil service for DPF. Even if the oil service is reset, if the DPF service is not reset, the oil warning light will flash when the service becomes over-due on PSA vehicles and on Fiat's there will be a message on the central screen that says 'carry out oil service'. Allegedly the PSA software will start to limit the available power from the engine if this is not attended to within 500 miles or so. This does not happen to Fiat's.

The above only applies to Euro5 vehicles or earlier European spec Euro4's that had a DPF from the factory. (Very rare).

Thanks Euroserv your explanation is entirely consistent with what occurred and the vehicle handbook contains a specific explanation about power limitation if the service is not done. The limitation process ias explained in the handbook is different for 3 litre engines (which I think would be Fiats). The handbook is in the van which is in a secure compound but the above is roughly correct.
