ChrisD
Good evening I would appreciate advice re my absorption fridge. It's a dometic RM 8501 and my campervan is a 2017 rollerteam 746. I suspect I have overloaded it. It works fine on 12v and hookup. On gas the top outside vent has soot on it and it fumes badly. Is the result of overloading the fridge? Clearly the burner and flue are now requiring cleaning. Interested if anyone else had experienced similar issues. Many thanks Chris
hallii
The soot will have built up in the chimney and the chimney will need cleaning. The burner may need cleaning and any rubbish vacuumed out. The jet may also need cleaning. Depending on the access it is a job you can do yourself, however, access can be tight, if you have any doubt then get your local dealers to do the job, it shouldn't take them long, but sometimes the fridge has to be removed for access 8-) H
747
A sooty flue is a sign of a poor flame at the gas burner assembly, as is the smell you noticed. As suggested, remove the burner assembly and clean it. While it is out, clean out the Flue and reassemble.
ChrisD
Thanks guys. Sorry for late reply. Cleaned the flue, the burner and flame picture are fine. I'm now on ehu and fridge on mains but still smells of fumes. Haven't yet tested it on gas but am concerned about the smell Any ideas appreciated Regards Chris

Haven't yet tested it on gas but am concerned about the smell Any ideas appreciated Regards Chris There will still be a flow of air through the vents even when on EHU so if you found soot in the gas exhaust vent then even after cleaning the smell will linger for a while. So maybe that is what you you can smell? I’d have expected it to smell significantly less though than before you carried out your clean. I’d be tempted to switch the fridge to gas and monitor it both for visual soot and smell for a day or two – you may find that things settle back down to normal. The other possibility is that something combustible is being heated although that seems unlikely unless something has been dislodged or enter the area behind the fridge. If batteries are being cooked then they give a smell which could be taken as Gas fumes.
ChrisD
Thanks again. I will check tomorrow. Pouring with rain here at mo not conducive with removing the external vents again. Regards Chris
ChrisD
Don't believe this. Wifey put the fridge on gas earlier this afternoon when I had assumed it had been on ehu. Naturally all my previous assumptions are now out the window and I need to start again. We have enjoyed a lively discussion on how this occurred and have decided we wish to remain married. Tomorrow is certainly another day.. Chris
