We have ordered a small coachbuilt motorhome on a Renault Master which we hope will be arriving in the New Year. Can anyone advise on good insurance companies/covers?

Lynn Several insurance Companies offer free breakdown / accident recovery as part of the package. If you opt for one of these, check that they do not have restrictions on weight or length of vehicle. Many owners have found out the hard way. Stuart

Hi Lynn...If you are both over 50 try Saga. If you have a nice big no claim bonus on your car, you can carry it on to your new motorhome cover, so you don't have to start from scratch, providing you let saga insure your car as well. Their quotes are usually very good.

Saga were close and now that they front for a recovery service probably one of the best. Very easy to deal with. Currently the Nuevo is insured by Camping & Caravan Club. They can also arrange RAC recovery and European Motoring & Personal cover at competitive rates. Rather recalcitrant at answering the phone once they have your premium. Have tried the 'Specialists' but they often seem, to me, rather expensive. Nick

Try Bakers of Cheltenham - 08004961516 or their website. I have used them for some time and they are very good and competitive - much better to deal with than Saga. Recovery is via the RAC and works well both in the UK and abroad, as i know to my cost! Also try Safeguard, another widely recommended campervan specialist - 01132 581614 or their website. Also Comfort - haven't got a phone number, but you will find it in MMM, in the adverts or the Services Directory. Brian

When I did a survey about 4 years ago for MMM, the ones mentioned so far came out at the top of the price range - especially Bakers and Saga. But Bakers do provide very comprehensive cover. Try a selection of the broker that advertise in MMM - and do try severeal because each has particular strengths and weaknesses. Some are netter on van conversions, other at expensive coachbuilts, and so on. Also check your Renault warranty. Mine gives me free roadside callout throughout Europe for the first three years, so there's not much point in paying extra for a policy which bundles it in - unless, of course, it's cheaper. Also check things like maximum time allowed out of the UK, maximum single trip, and, once you've got a satisfactory quote, ask for a copy of the policy document BEFORE you sign up (don't take no for an answer) and read it carefully to check it provides all the cover you need.

If you are going to be away from home for more than 30 days or so at a time, also check restrictions on your buildings and contents insurances. Many companies don't like extended absence, almost all will want to know if you're away more than a couple of months and may require an additional premium. Brian

Good point, Brian - having been with them Comfort Insurance (they advertise in MMM) will cover both motorhome and house with matching abilitiy to take longer trips abroad, so they're worth a try. Both insurances are with Norwich Union.
