LPG Bottle Refilling Banned by Total in France

I had almost convinced myself and my wife that a Gasit or Gaslow installation would be a good investment. Hence, I have been reading anything and everything that mentioned refillable systems.

I know that some companies in the UK have eschewed LPG but I was consoled by the fact that we do most of our touring on the Continent where LPG is easily obtained. Then I saw this link on the Motorhome Fun website.

It appears that the refilling of gas bottles for ‘habitation’ purposes has been banned by Total. :'( :'( If other companies follow suit, then obtaining LPG abroad could become very problematic. Although many respondents to the original posting suggest that they had rarely been refused or had simply gone to another forecourt it has left me thinking that refillable systems are not advisable. From this thread I’ve also learnt that refilling ‘habitation’ cylinders is illegal in Italy.

For what it’s worth, although this TOTAL-related prohibition has suddenly been mentioned on UK motorhome forums, it was actually advertised in France in October 2020. There were several French online discussions about this, not just the “Le Monde du Camping-Car” piece. (The link in Cattwg’s initial posting above was corrupt and I’ve corrected it..)

I notice that the FFCC (Fédération Française des campeurs, caravaniers et camping-caristes) got involved, but I don’t know if anything positive came of that.
