DVLA sends out a D46P about 90 days before the licence expires with a free envelope, not pre-paid.

The D46P tells you all you need to know and what to do if you need to renew a C1 or D1.

BTW a D4 medical can be obtained from £50.00, have a look on the interweb.

Mine have always come back dated from my birthday.

When I applied for my first renewal on reaching 70 it took eight months, but it did have nearly two months extra on it. Just re applied last week fort the next three years. The last time it took four days to come through, that must be a bit of a record!!!!

I lost 6 weeks when I applied early. I rang the DVLA and was told they date it from the date they process it and they would not alter it to my Birthday.

My advice is that if you have any medical problems, use your own Doctor. It will be more expensive but there is more chance that you will not need additional tests. You can also use your own Optician for the eye requirements. Mine did it for free.
