Mondial leisure AGM battery needed

If the AGM battery in Mabel’s 2008/9 Swift Mondial is the original, one might reasonably assume that the vehicle’s leisure-battery charging regimen is at least adequate for this type of battery.

discussed the leisure battery of a 2009 Swift Mondial and it will be noted that this was an 85Ah AGM type and (as shown in the photos in the thread) was installed ON ITS SIDE beneath a cab-seat.

 

If I were Mabel I’d ask a Swift dealership for advice on which battery might be a suitable replacement and/or enquire on SwiftTalk

It’s likely that quite a few owners of 2008/9 Mondials will have needed to replace the original AGM battery by now, so Swift dealerships should be able to advise, as should Mondial owners on SwiftTalk.

 

Otherwise, Mabel could remove the AGM battery and measure its dimensions as, once these were known, it should not be too difficult to suggest suitable replacements. (I don’t think the M-Tec brand is still marketed in the UK.)

 

If the replacement battery were also to be installed on its side, it would need to be AGM or gel type.

Thank you for your replies, yes it is installed under the driver's seat and on its side and can't see any details on it other than it is AGM and 85ah.

We have not been able to find one the size to fit yet, we rang Swift they told us they now use Yuasa rec 880 but can't find that either.

We only realised it was not holding its charge when we went 'off grid' last weekend, so it could have been on its way out for longer!

If Swift are now using Yuasa batteries (or recommending them as replacements for the M-TEC-branded AGM battery fitted to Mondial motorhomes in 2008/9) and assuming that the replacement battery will be mounted under the cab-seat and on its side as was the original and that installation will be straightforward, then it’s to be expected that the Yuasa battery will be one of their VBX9000 range

and with physical dimensions and battery-terminal position much the same as the original battery.

 

The photos in the 2010 forum thread I mentioned above suggest that the M-TEC battery was fairly ‘chunky’, so a 70Ah Yuasa YBX9096 (Length 278mm, Width 175mm, Height 190mm) MIGHT provide a direct replacement size-wise. Next up is the 80Ah VBX9115 (Length 317mm, Width 175mm, Height 190mm), followed by the 95Ah YBX9019 (Length 353mm, Width 175mm, Height 190mm).

 

Yuasa YBX9000 batteries can be obtained much more cheaply than the RRP quoted on the Yuasa website and equivalent Exide AGM batteries (used as leisure-batteries nowadays in Hobby motorhomes) would be an alternative.

 

As Swift have been little help, the next step should be to do as I suggested above and measure the dimensions of your present battery and report back to this forum what these are.

 

Without knowing what you currently have (You’ve said there are no identifying details other than the battery is AGM-type and 85Ah) and that battery’s dimensions, there’s no knowing what would fit. Once it’s established what would fit (I assume you would prefer an easy ‘like-for-like’ replacement, rather than possibly need to play about with cabling and the manner in which the current battery is installed) it should be practicable to advise on battery makes/specifications/prices suitable for the replacement.

I suspect it may be a Yuasa REC80 they were suggesting. 80Ah and are available, You will need to move the adapter posts over from old battery along with checking the bolt threaded hole dimensions, and battery overall dimensions, It maybe Yuasa have renumbered the battery 880 to include the terminal posts. I don't know but you could ask them to clarify.

 

The Yuasa AGM batteries are among the best AGM batteries you can get and used in many mobility scooter applications.

Other options will be the likes of Varta or exide dual purpose AGM and really you are paying for starter capability as well as deep cycle rather than just deep cycle.

 

You will find a datasheet link on this page http://www.yuasa.co.uk/batteries/industrial/rec-vrla-cyclic-use/rec80-12.html and it shows 6mm Thread size. Dimensions 259Lx168W x212H

 

5 years ago I would never have recommended on cost because it was cheaper to fit cheaper batteries and replace when failing, but now you can get these batteries a lot cheaper so makes it a serious alternative to 'leisure' batteries but only available up to 80 Ah. However as you can discharge to 80% and still get really good cycle life its equivalent to a 120Ah flooded.and 100AH Leisure AGM and even larger batteries if you take cycle life into real account as well as capacity.

 

Possible supplier and at a good price. Have not searched hard for better prices.

Chances are what you have is an imported rebadged equivalent to the REC80.

Check if it has m6 terminals just slighty proud of surface and I suspect you have posts bolted on to adapt for your battery connection clamps.

There are many rebadged versions of this type of AGM battery and many are a bit light weight and are actually below their rated spec. For and 80/85 AH it should weigh about 27Kg. Many will be lower at around 23Kg as they have smaller plates.

A photo of your battery and label would be very useful in trying to identify exactly what it is

If I had to choose an industrial type AGM or equivalent which is what you very likely have I would choose Yuasa . There will be better batteries but will be a lot more expensive by a long way as will be very specialised batteries for specific characteristics such as aircraft use or UPS systems and a higher temperature range. Another factor is the charge rate, The Yuasa will charge at 20 Amps quite happily, many AGM batteries do not like charging above 5 Amps. for this capacity, they will but life is reduced.

I’ve attached copies of photos from the 2010 forum thread I mentioned in my posting of 31 May 2017 9:27 AM above.

 

These show a “M-Tec Leisurepower Dual Purpose 85ah Leisure Battery” mounted on its side under a cab-seat with its terminals pointing towards the vehicle’s dashboard. One of the terminals is shown in the 2nd photo and seems to be the type you’ve referred to with an adapter attached to accept the battery clamp.

 

There appears to be some sort of wooden structure directly behind the battery, which MIGHT explain why Swift chose to use an on-its-side AGM battery and a quite complex metal framework to secure it.

 

The Yuasa REC80’s quoted dimensions

 

Length (mm) - 259 (±3)

Width (mm) - 168 (±3)

Height (mm) - 212.5 (±3)

Height over terminals (mm) - 212.5 (±3)

 

closely match those provided by Mabel, so the REC80 should fit straight in with (as you’ve said) just the terminal-adapters needing to be swapped over.
