Any advice about travelling along the western fjord coast of Norway? How easy is it to hop across fjords on ferries? Is booking required? Thanks.

Norwegian western route very easy to follow it si either tunnels bridges or ferries which are all part of the road network, booking not needed. Plenty ot open space and safe wild camping. Mel.

Winter starts in Mid August so the Norwegians go back to work. All the roads are quiet and usually easy to stop on for photographs. Picnic areas are usually surrounded by trees and have no view. Calor gas doesn't exist nor did we see Camping Gaz. Alcohol is so expensive you need to be seriously rich to be an alcoholic...take your own [alcohol that is]...its legal. Most caravan site receptions stay open late: some till 11 pm Near Trondheim there were unexpected unmanned tolls to pay for a future road. You need a supply of small change.....what happens if you don't pay is anyone's guess. The ferries are great and reliable.(if you are old enough ask for a pensioner's discount)..timetables are available....the ports are so small they just about feature on the maps but its all part of the main road system. Some of the tunnels are dreary, poorly lit (beam deflectors don't help) and poorly surfaced. Scary to do 8 miles when you realise that you haven't seen any one else. The best tunnel is the 25 km tunnel out of Flam. Norway accepts the International Insurance card Sweden doesn't, which is another story. Lights can be a problem. Headlights are compulsory at all times. Its easy to forget to switch them off. Most Norwegians speak excellent English. Have a great time, we did. Can't wait to get back.
