Obvious Answer to Overbooked Campsites This Summer

From posts, I understand that campsites are rapidly becoming completely booked for the summer and motorhomers are finding it increasingly difficult to find a pitch. We are in danger of a repeat of last summer when campervans were parked everywhere and thus annoying locals and damaging our reputation.

It seems to me that an obvious solution would be for the camping clubs to negotiate with the Government to ease the 5 unit restriction on certified sites. It would be easy to double the number of units on most of the certified sites that I have visited.

Has anyone seen any information about whether this is being considered?

Not all CL type farm site can do this but am sure many could. Might be a good move if it would be allowed is a different matter. Have been on some that it would not be a problem some even have 2 CL's one in husband one in wife's name and that's ok. Worth one or all of the clubs trying it on a one year basis if the Gov will allow.

There will be no problem of no place to pitch. Bournemouth currently have two locations, one near the football stadium and one a beach side car park where motorhomes and caravans are pitched up. The council have visited and provided toilets and rubbish skips. It all appears legal with no Covid infringement fines being issued or any other fines for that matter.

Easter should be great down here in Dorset.

UK Easter in 2021 will be from 2 April (Good Friday) through 5 April (Easter Monday).

The UK's 2021 summer (referred to in this thread’s title) will be from 1 June through 31 August (Meteorological) or 21 June through 22 September (Astronomical).

The relevant legislation covering CL/CS-type campsites is the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960. This Act includes the following:

Sites approved by exempted organisations

Subject to the provisions of paragraph 13 of this Schedule, a site licence shall not be required for the use as a caravan site of land as respects which there is in force a certificate issued under this paragraph by an exempted organisation if not more than five caravans are at the time stationed for the purposes of human habitation on the land to which the certificate relates.

Within the C&MC’s guide to setting up a CL, Rule 4 says:

Rule 4: You may only take five caravans at a time (1960 Act)

The most important condition, formal planning permission and a site licence are required for more than five pitches and your site would no longer qualify for CL status.

By far the majority of complaints The Club receives involve excess numbers and this is clearly a major concern for The Club.

There’s nothing to suggest that the camping clubs are lobbying for the 5 pitches maximum to be increased for 2021. As any increase would (presumably) demand that the 1960 Act be amended, it seems extremely unlikely (to me) that this could be done in time for the 2021 summer camping season.

Derek, thanks for the researched reply.

You are probably right about insufficient time for the law to be changed, but all it needs is the Government to tell CL owners that they wont be enforcing the law in 2021

Devon are getting in on the Act several of their council carparks have been allowing over nite parking but now are jumping on the band wagon

The East Devon Car Parking TAFF, when they met on Tuesday, unanimously agreed to ask officers to review the existing camper van and motorhome policy that East Devon District Council have for their off-street car parks, and called for tariffs to rise, potentially to as much as £30 a night from the £11 charged now.

Then I hope the good people of East Devon wont complain if campervans park all over the place to avoid the £30 charge.
