Hi looking at shipping our van (2012 Elddis Aspire 255 pug 130) to the states for six months, it will have all new tyres disc pads etc, all new hoses belts etc, full service, expect to cover in excess of 20,000 miles costs stack up quite well, last time we hired an RV it did 11 mpg 34 cents a mile and $77 a day back in 2010. Against around €7000 euros to ship plus insurance and 30 mpg. U.K. Reg vehicles are allowed into USA for up to twelve months and no restrictions on right hand drive. Shipping is via roll on roll off ferry.

Hi looking at shipping our van (2012 Elddis Aspire 255 pug 130) to the states for six months, ...Shipping is via roll on roll off ferry.

Check out the security of Ro-Ro as I have seen instances on other routes of vehicles arriving in less than pristine condition!

Container shipping seems to be the only secure method but obviously may cost more.

Hi

The only problem I can see is if you have a mechanical breakdown. As far as I can see there are no FIAT dealerships in the states so nobody to run diagnostics.

I seem to remenber reading about someone having to ship there Moho back to Uk to have it repaired.

Sooooo the risk is failure of a part that requires specialist diagnostic equipment to identify the problem. The only example I have of this type of failure is the failure of my antilock brake pump 2 years back. The result was a range of warning lights and alarm bells on the dashboard. The local dealer was able to Id the problem but said very unusual and there was a question as to whether there was even a replacement in the country as they are not known as a problem.

As an alternative to hiring I believe some dealers will sell with a guaranteed buy back price.

As to shipping when I considered this some years back I read that those who had done this shipped their van out in a container.

Hi Ted: I looked at taking our pvc over, or rather having it taken over, and didn’t take the idea further than a very basic quote. The cost didn’t seem too bad. I was most concerned about the condition that the van might be in, and the vulnerability of the contents in transit and on the dock sides.

I’ll be interested to hear how you proceed.

We’ve got used to having our own transport and accommodation with us on major trips around Europe, so I’m still interested, but maybe the high mileage that we would be encouraged to plan would be ok at the planning stage but not so attractive after the first 6 weeks.

It’s an enormous country!

Good luck,

Snowie

I was talking about that with a Irish man I met in France the problem he had was a major breakdown which he had to pay for before they'd buy it back.

When we went a hire car and over nighting in motels was the better option never failed to find a room and never booked one

Is it a Fiat? I thought it was a Peugeot. I don't think they are in the same group either, but I'm happy to be corrected. Regards,

I think your right but the same would apply there'd be no Peugeot dealers either

Re.roll on roll of I have shipped two motorhomes to New zealand (personal imports) and apart from a flat battery no problem.there is also insurance to cover damage and you could take photos of it prior to shipping I do that automatically with rental vehicles.

Ram promaster is based on x250 generation but obviously the engines are completely different, although the 3 liter diesel one is supposedly from FIAT so if that's also the case with yours you might be lucky. Wouldn't expect them to fix a 2.3, 2.2 or the newer 2.0 diesel unless some of these are options in chrysler cars? I don't see why they would have a problem with everything else (brakes etc.) as it's mostly the same vehicle and getting quite popular for camper conversions.

I've heard of a canadian shipping his to Europe so don't see it as a huge issue going the other way. But maybe bring some extra engine parts that would be hard to get and break more often? If not, there's always UPS/DHL/FEDEX to bring you parts from back home and some competent mechanic shouldn't be too puzzled with where stuff goes.

From Liverpool to Baltimore, USA

Dear Mr. Lawton,

thank you for your inquiry regarding a camper shipment to Baltimore, Maryland in the USA.

Attached you find our quotation.

The vessels depart weekly from Liverpool and arrive 11 days later in Baltimore.

The shipment usually runs as follows:

drop off in Liverpool: at the latest 2-3 working days before departure (Thursday until noon).

scheduled departure in Liverpool every Monday

scheduled arrival in Baltimore every Friday

pickup in Baltimore: 2-3 working days after arrival (usually Mo/Tue).

If there is a holiday the pickup is possible one day later.

A motorhome/camper can be shipped fully equipped (incl. camping equipment and personal belongings like clothes), but it must look apparently empty.

That means everything has to be neatly stowed in closets and storage areas.

Of course it’s forbidden to transport food, alcohol, weapons, drugs, etc. inside the camper.

Road & Marine Insurance:

We can help you to insure your vehicle in North America (motorhomes and caravans, which are not older than 30 years).

The policy covers European Motorhomes in the USA & Canada.

We can offer you a Marine Insurance with a premium of 0.9% of the current vehicle’s value.

Booking

If you would like to book a shipment, please complete the booking form and send it back to us. We will also need a copy of passport and a copy of vehicle registration.

Most of our clients book 3 month in advance.

Changes and cancellations are free of charge until one week before the planned departure; the invoice will be sent after the vessels departure (no deposit required).

Return shipment:

The return shipment can be booked without any problems by email during your journey.

Of course the return can be from another port in USA, Canada, Panama or South America.

For the return shipment from Baltimore & Halifax the latest drop-of day is Monday.
