A club member on a new fiat VAN has this triangle so now and then but not always. The warning text said: Check your diesel filter. Three months old, I am only aware of water in it by a contact switch. Fiat checked the filter and The ECU and did a test drive. no warning light came up Today she said it there again. Faulty contact? Change of cables? Who pays, fiat or dealer ?

Monique,

On modern diesels the filter referred to by this type of message is usually the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the exhaust system and not the fuel filter.

Suggest your friend asks the dealer for a printout of when ALL DPF regenerations have occurred and if any of them have been 'Aborted' due to possibly switching off the engine, etc.

Keith.

PS The MH may require a good drive on a motorway in a lower gear then normal to get engine revs to above 2,500 or even 3,000 rpm to burn off the DPF. What does a modern Fiat handbook say about DPF regenerations please?

As the fault relates to a Fiat Ducato (the fact that it’s a panel-van should not matter) resolving the problem in principle will be Fiat’s responsibilty under the terms and conditions of the Fiat warranty. As a Fiat agent has already checked the filter and the ECU, it would seem that Fiat acknowledges that responsibility.

On the other hand, if work involved in converting a panel-van into a motorhome (eg. changes made to the vehicle’s orginal electrical system) is found to have caused this problem, Fiat might argue that it’s the motorhome converter’s fault not theirs and that it’s the motorhome converter’s responsibility to sort the problem out.

What does "Who pays, fiat or dealer ?” mean?

(The amber triangle warning-symbol is described as a “Generic Failure Indication” and there are several possible causes given including “Diesel filter sensor failure”. In that instance the handbook’s advice is to contact a Fiat dealeship as soon as possible to have the fault fixed.)
