A couple of days ago I received the following email from Comfort Insurance that may help regarding ‘Green cards'

GREEN CARDS

The outcome of negotiations between the United Kingdom and Europe on the final terms of the Brexit deal are still ongoing and it’s currently uncertain whether UK motorists will require a green card to travel in Europe after the transition period ends on 31st December 2020.

Comfort motorhome, campervan and caravan insurance policies include European cover as standard. Whilst we remain in Europe, evidence that motor insurance meets the requirements of EU law is contained on the back of the certificate of motor insurance. After 31st December 2020, this may be insufficient and depending upon the final agreement between the UK and Europe, a green card may be required. The requirement for a green card could extend to all vehicles including caravans and trailers too, all which may require a separate green card when being driven on roads in Europe.

There is no change to the cover that we’ll be providing to our motorhome and campervan customers irrespective of the outcome of the final Brexit negotiations. Details of the cover provided whilst travelling abroad can be found in your policy booklet and the European cover statement wordings will remain on the back of your certificate of motor insurance. To ensure that our motorhome and campervan insurance policyholders have the necessary green card (should it be required), we will be incorporating an annual green card into customer’s new business and renewal documentation packs with effect from 1st January 2021 onwards. This will enable any planned European travel to continue, safe in the knowledge that insurance cover is in force and all paperwork, should it be required is in order. If, due to the outcome of negotiations between the UK and Europe, green cards are not ultimately required, there will be no change to the documentation that we provide you.

In the interim period, if you are intending to travel to Europe before 31/12/20 and require a green card, please call us on 0800 0304 206 and we’ll issue you a green card with an expiry date to coincide with the expiry of your annual insurance policy. There will be no charge for electronic versions of green cards. However, should you require us to provide you with a printed copy of your green card, an administration charge will apply.

The name ‘green card’ refers to the document’s historical requirement to be printed on green paper. However, green cards which are international certificates of insurance can be printed on white paper. Further details about driving abroad and green cards can be found on the Motor Insurance Bureau website.

We won’t be automatically issuing annual green cards to customers with caravans or trailers. This is because there is a requirement to record unique caravan/trailer details on the green card. If you have a caravan or trailer and you’re intending to travel abroad after 31st December 2020, please give us a call on 0800 0304 206 and we'll issue a green card for you.
