Cagem
Inspired by this recent thread: https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Arm-rests-on-cab-seats/51118/ I would like to remove the arm rests from my 2015 Transit. We don't use them and they get in the way. I have searched the forums but not been able to find any guidance on how to go about this on a recent Transit. Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks Andrew
Derek Uzzell
I’m trying to remember what was involved when I removed the armrests from my 2005 Transit Mk 6’s cab-seats... This ebay advert https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252768202519 is for a Transit Mk 7 armrest and I’m pretty sure this is what was on my vehicle. Removing it involved taking off a round plastic cover on the outer side of the armrest. The end of a round tube was revealed (visible in the advert’s 1st photo) and a bolt accessed through the tube then needed to be undone - after which the armrest detached from the side of the seat. (Obviously, if a motorhome’s armreats have been fitted with a fabric cover, that cover would need to be removed/displaced to get at the cover over the tube.) I don’t know if the Transit Mk 8 has the same armrest arrangement as the Mk 6 and Mk 7, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it had. There was a similar enquiry in 2017 on the Ford Transit Forum https://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=178251 though this related to a Mk 8 Custom (not the ‘big’ Mk 8) and wasn’t answered. (Perhaps nobody knew how to remove the armrest, or thought it was so self-evident that it did not warrant a reply!) If you don’t get ‘hands-on’ advice here from an owner of a Transit Mk 8, try asking on the Ford Transit Forum.
Cagem
Derek, thank you for your detailed response. The arm rest on the Mk 8 is not the same shape as in your link - it's more like a long triangle in cross section. I have had another poke about and can now answer my own question! There is a metal clip on the seat, which comes out of the bottom of the arm rest housing, wraps around the housing and is held in place at the top of the housing by a plastic lug. Using a screwdriver to lift the clip over the lug into the space between the seat and the arm rest releases the arm rest, which can then be pulled out. I have photos if anyone is interested. Now to work out what to do with the gap in the seat cover... Regards Andrew
