Somport tunnel into Spain

I don't know the current road conditions but we came back from Spain that way a few years ago. Brilliant road leading up to the Spanish side of the tunnel. But on the French side it was a bit like driving the roads in North Wales (narrow and twisty). A few Spanish HGV's on the road though so I assume the French keep it snow free???

And use something like the Spanish government or via michelin website to give you an update on road conditions too..Things change quickly up in them there hills!

Does anybody know road conditions etc in the Somport Tunnel area. Hope to be going that way in about a weeks time so would be good to know details. Have never been that way before Spain in the winter 6 times but never via Somport. B-)

Why do you want to use the Somport at this time of year, when there are much lower crossing points, if you’re worried about snow.

Just trying to find a quicker route to Spain as not by choice we are starting out later than normal. Planning on not using toll roads (well not many))) and going from Calais to Rouen, Chartres, Tours, Bordeaux, Mont de Morsan, Orthez, Somplon, A23 Teruel, Benicasim .Hope to arrive on or before Dec 23rd .Driving not too many miles per day .What route would you recommend if not Somport ?. B-)

Hi, we used it last year in an A class motorhome 8,4 metres long, yes its twisty but it,s fine as long as your confident driving twisty roads, great scenery and an experience, don't be put off by straight line [toll road users]

We are now in Calpe enjoying the fine weather. Hope you make it through!

We tried to get though France as quick as possible because of fuel blockades etc. and the cost of diesel there, so we went a similar route to yours but got on the peage from below Bordeaux to Irun Spain and followed the route to Zarragoza then down to Valencia, stayed on the AP7 until it became a toll road then turned towards Denia.

Thanks, Have you drove the pass into Sloveina the Soca Pass near Kranjska Gora.

Something like 25 hairpin bends at 17 degrees with cobble stones on the bends, not much straight lines on that one LOL. We like Calpe and might call in again in Jan/Feb, hope we can free camp again but heard that some spots have been closed. Please save some nice weather for us. :-D :-D :-D

Hi, Calpe has lost nearly all of free camping spots, there a few vans dotted along side roads, but the large area near the salt lake in town is now a no-no.

We always use Estrella Polar campsite, as it's very relaxed and informal, has a good bar and right next to a couple of restaurants and the Grizzly Bear bar

We came through the Somport a week ago, and all was fine. We were in the car this time, but my wife did comment that in our 8.3 / 3.5 metre hight van, that some of the overheads did seem tight, so caution advised! The tunnel is rarely closed, and is well notified if it is. As previously written, check the web cams the day before you want to us it, and all should be well, and you will have time to head east instead, if the weather is bad!
