Town/City break help required for November

I am looking for a city/town break for our last UK trip of 2019. I am not in any clubs and I need a site within 45 min walk into a good size town or city.

We are still into our 1st year so not familiar with many sites near towns that are open this time of year.

We live near Bristol, so 200 miles from here would be ok for a 4 night break.

Stayed there only once, it's not a brilliant site, but Oxford Camping and Caravan site is within walking distance of the city, and on a bus route.

As this, not the nicest site, but near to P&R so plenty of buses into town.

Quite close to you there is the Camping & caravanning Club's Salisbury site, this is open right through till January and accepts non members.

There is if you want to avoid the road an easy walk into the city much of which can be taken along the river on a shared cycle way walking path*, plus there are very regular buses on the road outside the sites long access drive.

* Google indicates the riverside route right into the city centre up to the cathedral close is a 34 minute 1.7 mile stroll. On route you pass a Waitrose for a coffee and bun, but it might pay to wait and go into the cathedral's lovely "Cloister Cafe", where just a few steps away also gets you to view for free the Magna Carta.

We too look for campsites that either are within walkable distance to amenities or have a bus stop nearby. These are ones we use regularly,

Brierfield adult campsite just outside Cheltenham. Spacious hard standing pitches and good facilities. Regular bus from outside site to Gloucester and Cheltenham. Open all year.

Swiss farm campsite at Henley on Thames. Various types of pitch on offer. 10 min walk into town and bus stop outside site to Marlow or Henley. I think it closes mid December.

Oxon Hall Touring Park outside Shrewsbury. Various types of pitch.. Park and ride 10 min walk or 15 min to bus stop (ask at reception for directions). Sometimes has 3 for 2 nights on offer. Open all year.

Llanberis Touring Park (same group as Oxon hall). Hard standing. 15 min walk to village. Bus stop on main road goes to Caernarfon. I would recommend the slate museum which was free and about 40 min walk away, near the Padarn Llyn Railway. Also Snowden Mountain Railway and the Electric Mountain. Open until mid January.

Would also endorse Cardiff campsite mentioned above. Very handy to walk through park into lovely town centre. Would recommend boat trip to Tiger Bay and a visit to St Fagan’s National Museum of History.

Last month we spent a week at the Morris Leisure site just outside Shrewsbury. You can walk into the town but I reckon it'll take an hour - longer if you sightsee on the way. It's easier to get the park & ride bus (not Sundays) just outside the site as Thirtle26 says. There is an excellent restaurant just down the road (easily walkable) from the site.

We've been to other Morris Leisure sites at Bridgnorth and Ludlow in late Autumn but believe Shrewsbury is the better bet. There is good shopping and plenty of history to be had in town. You can certainly spend hours walking around. People are friendly.

And outside the town is the beautiful Shropshire - our favourite county - and Herefordshire - 2nd favourite, with its River Wyre, the Golden Valley, and cider!

Stating the obvious but something to consider at this time of year, is- a) Hard standing pitches b) Availability due to Christmas Markets?.

Although we haven't used it for years, the last time we used the Oxford C&CC site during winter, we all had to park up, nose to tail, on the track running through the site (and we were still charged for a full pitch fee). Not that we would've been sitting out sunning ourselves, it still wasn't ideal. It may well have changed since then but worth checking?

We've used Briarfields at Cheltenham quite a few times over the years(handy/quick bus trip into both Chelt and Glouc) but if the Gloucester Victorian market is on, the site can sometimes get booked up. The same goes if the dates you want coincide with a race meeting.

Don't write this off before you look closely at the offer, but we've done two trips to the Isle of Wight this year on a special deal from Red Funnel ferries. We had a five day break at Waverley Park East Cowes for c£140 inc ferry and a 5 day at The Orchards for similar price. Both are four star and have pools though Waverley's is outdoor, you'd be brave this time of year. The ferry is abut an hour and has a decent full english breakie too. Loads of good walks and both sites are on bus routes. Have a look and call Red Funnel and they'll do a better deal over the phone than on their website.

We've also stayed at Briarfields at Cheltenham and would recommend that one too.

Just returned from a long weekend away at the above . V nice site and a quite simply stunning town , loads to do , great shops , bars and eateries .

We walked into and back from town ( got a cab back late one evening , top tip , walk to the railway station to get a cab , telephone private hire are a nightmare here )

We go there twice a year ( spring and winter ) and love it.

Have to put a slight dampener on proceedings however as it seems the future of the site is under threat from a new proposed spur of the Shrewsbury bypass ! Get in there whilst u can.
