Conrad J
Just wondering if there's a better way when I want to turn on the gas water heater. Seems a bit odd that I have to go and remove the vent cover. Yes, I guess it has to be there to stop rain getting in, but surely there could be a better design? Derek Uzzell
The cowl cover (all of the several designs) for Truma Ultrastore water heaters has a reputation for being difficult to remove. (This is a 2011 moan) https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=8&TopicID=242270&ThreadPage=1 Unlike Truma’s ‘combi’ appliances, Ultrastore is vulnerable to rain being driven into the heater’s interior through the cowl and preventing this happening would require a redesign of the water heater itself. However, many motorcaravanners I’ve seen camping/travelling abroad seem unconcerned about this happening and don’t bother to fit the the cowl cover. If an Ultrastore is used regularly on gas, any rainwater that gets inside should bet burnt off.
Conrad J
Not a big problem removing it, just think there must be a better design possible so I don't have to! Yes, seen a few 'vans without the cover on, assumed they were rentals the companies leaving it off so the system wasn't damaged by it being left on by a customer. Derek Uzzell
If you refer to Truma's operating instructions for the Ultrastore heater, you should find the guidance is that the cowl cover should be fitted if the leisure-vehicle is to be out of use for an extended period. Obviously, when the appliance is to be run on gas, the cowl cover must be removed beforehand (if the cover is not removed the heater is designed to go into 'fault mode') But if the heater is to be used regularly - sometimes on 230V and sometimes on gas - it's not mandatory for the cover to be put back on after each 'on gas' session has finished. The reason Continental-European motorcaravanners tend to leave the cowl cover off is probably because they run the heater more often on gas than on 230V.
