Guest George Waring
I have a motorcaravan based on a Fiat Ducato 1.9 TD. Less than 30,000 miles over ten years. The engine has recently started producing a strange howling noise, but only when the vehicle is in motion. The pitch of the howl rises and falls with engine revs and while working up the gears can produce a fair imitation of a police siren! Once cruising in top gear the noise is barely audible. Given the symptoms, I am assuming that the noise is attributable to a turbo fault of some kind - possibly an air leak somewhere - but because the noise is only there while the vehicle is in motion it is rather difficult to pinpoint the source. Has anyone experienced something similar with a turbo diesel Ducato ? George Waring
Guest peter goddard
I am not a mechanic and no doubt you will have more replies soon but it sounds like it may be a dry bearing. Some years ago we had the same engine in a Citroen car and we were always advised to idle a turbo charged engine before switching off to allow the turbo to cool down gradually. If you did not do this the heat would fry the oil on the impeller bearings and eventually it would seize. I would get it checked out ASAP.
Guest Clive
Get your other half to sit in the drivers seat and rev the engine while you look under the bonnet. It could be as simple as a rubber turbo pipe come adrift because a jubilee clip was loose. The rubber pipes soften over time and when this happens its time to replace them. Had this problem on a Land Rover. Hope this helps.
Guest George Waring
I received the following advice in a different forum. May be of interest to other Ducato motorhome owners. You never know ! Hi George, I had exactly the same problem. Found the hose between the turbo and manifold came loose. Ordinary hose clips don't last, they're ok for a short while then blow again. Found some heavy duty ones here http://marcleleisure.co.uk/Sund001/TurboPipeClamps01.htm I haven't had any problems since. John
Guest Gordon
As a precaution get your cambelt idler or tensioner wheels checked out as they like other manufacturers, Vauxhall come to mind, they whined before breaking up disasterously.
