Turbo question

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me if the Peugeot Boxer 2.2hdi euro5 engine has a variable vane turbo ? Reason for asking is, due to my recent break down when my motorhome went into limp mode. ECU diagnosed fault P0234 (turbo charger overboost condition) and i`m thinking of adding some "Forte Turbo Cleaner" to help free-up the turbo vanes if this is the case.

According to Wikipedia, the 2198cc motor fitted to Peugeot Boxers from 2010-2014 had three possible power outputs - 110PS, 130PS or 150PS.

I’d guess that the 150PS motor would have had a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) and the 110PS and 130PS motors might not have, as that was the situation with Fiat Ducato 2.3litre motors for the same period - the most powerrful motor had a VGT and the less powerful variants did not.

If your Boxer’s turbocharger is not a VGT type, using the Forté product should do no harm. And, if the turbo is a VGT, it might do some good.

It perhaps needs saying that if the vane-adjusting mechanism inside the turbocharger really seizes up, it’s unlikely that any additive treatment will free it. The 2.0litre 125PS motor of my 2005 Ford Transit had a VGT and the mechanism that adjusted the vanes stuck. As the VGT’s vacuum-actuator was external and accessible an accurate diagnosis was easy, but rectification required the turbocharger being removed and cleaned by a specialist company (Turbo Technics).

If you can identify the turbo’s make & part number

or contact Turbo Technics and give them your motor’s power output (100, 130 or 150)

https://www.turbotechnics.com/vnt-turbo-operation/

you should be able to get confirmation as to whether the turbo is a VGT or not.

I notice that, in your earlier enquiry

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Break-Down/56501/

it was suggested that the problem might lie with the turbo actuator and, if that’s so, ‘cleaning' the turbo internally won’t address this. An actuator issue was also mentioned here

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Boxer-Engine-Management-Light/47646/

Either the problem was a one-off and won’t happen again, or it will reoccur. Unless you are prepared to get professional investigation, using the Forté stuff is probably all you can do yourself.

Re: my original question.

Took my motorhome to the garage and asked them to lube up the turbo actuator linkage as a precautionary, they said the turbo actuator was electronic on my model but greased up were they could. Prior to putting it in the garage i added two bottles of "Forte Turbo Cleaner" to 45ltrs of diesel and took it for drive. After about 15mins i accelerated hard and the engine stuttered and wouldn`t pick-up just for a few seconds, then vroom vroom away it went. I continued to drive it hard for another half-hour and again today for 35mins with no problems. So IMO if you experience similar turbo problems as mine, try this stuff first it worked for me and could save you money ;-)
