Tyre load rating - OK or not?

I recently bought a 2016 Swift Bolero 744 from a dealer. The axle ratings for this are 2100kg Front and 2600 2500kg Rear with a maximum of 4250kg.

 

I recently weighed the van fully laden and are well under both individual axle and total weights, with readings of 1680kg and 2240kg.

 

The rear tyres, which I assume are those fitted from new as the van only had 8,000 miles when I bought it, have a load rating of 116. This is 2756lb or 1250kg per tyre - so unable to take the load weighting of the axle and is uncomfortably close to my fully laden weight.

 

Questions:

 

1) Is this legal if I keep the loading below that of the tyre rating?

2) Should I push back on the supplying dealer for replacement with tyres of a rating that allows full loading?

Just looked in the Fiat manual and rather confusingly it shows the weight for 116 as being 1250kg as does blackcircles.com The previous weight I quoted comes from the goodyear.com site.

 

 

So I'm assuming the US are more conservative on weights than the UK and legally at least I am OK...

You have given the same figure of 1,250 kg per tyre in both your postings!

 

All the info I can find for a LI of 116 is also 1,250 kg.

 

Has your MH been uprated at any time or is the 2,600 kg rear axle limit as delivered from the factory?

According to the Fiat handbook a 2016 coachbuilt motorhome based on a Ducato Maxi (recreational) chassis would normally include tyres with a specification of 225/75 R16CP 116/114Q or 225/75 R16CP 118R.

 

The Ducato handbook quotes maximum permitted axle loadings of 2100kg (front axle) and 2400kg or 2500kg (rear axle) when the chassis has a 4250kg maximum gross weight, or 2100kg (front axle) and 2500kg (rear axle) when the chassis has a 4400kg maximum gross weight. In either case tyres with a load index of 116 (1250kg per single wheel) would be legally acceptable for the rear axle's maximum loading (2 x 1250kg = 2500kg)

 

As Colin has said, the relevant Swift brochure quotes maximum axle loadings of 2100kg (front axle) and 2500kg (rear axle) for a Bolero 744 model. (image of brochure table below).

 

Obviously, if a Bolero 744’s maximum rear axle loading were 2600kg and its tyres had a specification of 225/75 R16CP 116/114Q there would be potential problems and a buyer might demand that tyres with the alternative 225/75 R16CP 118R specification be fitted. (Load Index 118 = 1320kg per single wheel, so 2 x 1320 = 2640kg maximum permitted axle loading.)

 

Continental and Michelin both market a ‘camping-car’ tyre with the 225/75 R16CP 118R specification.

I did indeed get the axel rating wrong, doing it from memory.

 

If an admin sees this thread I think it would be best to delete it so my misinformation does not confuse anyone who happens across it in the future...
