I would suggest you use municipals and join 'France Passion' which lets you camp in vineyards,very basic. Use aires for emptying waste. If you access the Camping Car web site(one of the motorhomoing magazines) it has a guide on the site to aires de service, which enable you to empty and fill.It also helps to improve your French.

I think your best bet initially would be to search the forum on "france" (omitting the quotes). You'll retrieve loads of earlier postings that should be helpful and you can ignore the ones that aren't relevant to your planned trip.

The French municipal sites are value for money, but the aires are good places to stop overnight, and most are free - you only pay to use the "bourne de service" from which you get fresh water and where you dump your waste - grey and black. The equivalent in Italy are the "Sosta dei Camping" Buy the two guides "Le Guide Officiel Camping Caravaning" and Le Guide Officiel Aires de Service Camping-Car" published by the "Les Guides Motor Presse" via the amazon.fr website - very easy to use, especially if you are familiar with the UK one. For Italy, try the websites www.camperweb.it/aree_attrezzate/aree_attrezzate.htm www.camperonline.it/; and www.camperweb.it/index.html;

If you are worried about safety then you need to consider proper sites. The Caravan Club have two useful books Caravan Europe 1 covering France, Spain, Portugal and Andorra and Caravan Europe 2 covering the rest of Europe. As well as listing nearly all the sites there is also a lot of useful info about rules, regulations, safety etc. They are about £10 each. Try phoning 01342 326944 or look on the website www:caravanclub.co.uk Good luck.
