Guest berti
has anyone any advice/ comments / contact info on a m/home exchange with someone in usa ? next oct/nov/dec our idea is to stay for max 90 days and see area around las vegas/ grand canyon with an rv for 4 weeks, then car hire / motels to san fransisco and finish in los angeles then hire a bike and travel route 66 to chicargo and fly back from there. 1...is this a realistic time scale or are we trying to cover too much area 2...what will the weather be like at this time priced hiring an rv and got a bit of a shock even with a good exchange rate !!! then we thought well our van would just be stuck on the drive so why not try a swap 1...how far in advance would we need to start the ball rolling 2...our van is a hymer 694g ..a tiddler by american standards... standard equipment not good in comparison..would we have any problems with high expectations perhaps not being met 3....any problems with the insurance on our van re adding non uk driver 4.... any good but cheap vehicle hire in usa as the main ones ..cruise america etc are beyond our budget thanks kind regards berti
Guest Neal
Berti Just a comment on your point no. 2 We have met US couples in UK who have either hired, borrowed, or even swapped motorhomes and their expectations regarding equipment have always seemed realistic. We met a couple in their 70's at York who owned a 36ft RV "back home". They had hired a VW camper (raising roof) in UK and were really enjoying themselves! Although they were impressed with our 30ft rig they said that they would feel uncomfortable piloting it around the UK I think, generally, Yanks understand that they wouldn't be able to manage their own full size, fully-equipped rigs in our country. Remember, the US is not known for producing the best drivers, and all the roads are like our motorways! They are just happy to see lil' ole England with it's quaint lil' campers! Guest mike T
I would question whether the weather (!) will be suitable in Oct - DEc period. Vegas may be fine, but the grand canyon area can be rather cold - it's a fair height, and of course the whole area except for the california coast is subject to a continental climate - hot summers & cold winters. A motorbike trip from LA to Chicago in December would be a bit dodgy?
