Hi motorhome was new in September 2015 .last month the leisure battery overheated/overcharged. Had everything checked and told it was a faulty battery, everything else working ok we were told . Battery out of warranty so had to pay for a new one. After researching concerned there could have been a fault wirh the built in automatic charger ,but can't prove this anyone agree.

If the motorhome was brand new September 2015 and the battery has failed, the supplying dealer should have replaced the battery with one of equivalent quality/capacity, to your satisfaction, FoC. This van was only three months old! The warranty on the battery is not relevant, it was the dealer's liability under consumer legislation, and you should not have been charged. Same will apply to the charger if it proves faulty. Dealer's diagnosis, dealer's liability.

Impossible to say, and pointless speculating, on cause of failure. The battery may have been left discharged for some time by the dealer, especially if it was a stock model you bought. If you use the van off grid you may inadvertently have run it flat (rule of thumb is that you should only ever use 60% of its capacity, taking more reduces battery life, running it flat is terminal unless it is immediately fully re-charged). Could even be that the charger was switched to the wrong setting for the type of battery fitted - or even a dud battery as stated. It can happen.

Folk may be able to shed more light if you can give make/model of motorhome, and preferably of the charger unit plus the make and capacity of the dead battery. They are all different.
