as novice euro travellers, (never been before) we are hoping to visit said region in june/July, complete with dogs. Are there any experienced motorhomers out there who know the region well and can advise on sites. We need~ peace and quiet, lovely wine/food. good walking. wonderful views, value for money sites ( I am a yorkshireman!) regards henry

Unless you have particular requirements that demand that you stay on campsites, you might consider joining the France Passion scheme (see www.france-passion.com)

It's so cheap to 'join' France Passion it's worth looking at it and 'having a go'. We've stayed on some amazing places and drunk some amazing wine for very little. And no, you do not have to buy. It's is not often that you are coerced into buying. Gone on give it a go...

We agree with Derek and Norma. France Passion is a great way to see France. Don't worry about your non French, you can if you prefer pick out the ones in the France Passion guide which inform you if English is spoken. But with a few words to cover "Good day" "Please" and "Thank you" and a small phrase book for the other bits you will get along fine. The French seem to appreciate you making an effort even if they cannot understand you.

As one Yorkshireman to another, I can recommend the L'Isle Vert campsite at MontsoreauIt is on the river, near where the Vienne joins the Loire. Lovely village with good restaurants. also the Aire (FREE!!!!) at Villaines-les-Rochers, with water and waste disposal, restaurants and boulangerie. About 5kms South of Azay-le-Rideau.

Try Camping de la Touche at Ligueil, about 5miles east of Loches. A peaceful site with new English owners who are working hard to have a site with really first class facilities. They have a website at: www.theloirevalley.com

We stayed at the municipal site at La Fleche late last summer, and thoroughly recommend it. The guardien was very helpful and knowlegable about the area. It was cheap at about 12 euro for 2 & dog inc elec. The site has a modern showerblock, and is by the river,it's just a short walk across the bridge into town. There is a good riverside walk to a large leisure lake too. For value for money sites, look at www.campingcard.com . It offers reduced prices at hundreds of sites in Europe outside July/Aug.

I can remember back in the mis 70's when we took the evening ferry to Calais and drove our Bedford Dormobile through the night until we had enough. Both kids fast asleep and the Mrs starting to get a bit "touchy" about navigating in the early hours. So we pulled into a lay by and crashed out. It was dark. In the morning we woke at sunrise in the middle of the Loir Valley. What a beautiful introduction to France that was. Don,t fret, don,t worry, just book the ferry and go! Vive la difference.

Our regular stop when traversing the Loire heading south is at Meung sur Loire, just west of Orleons. Small friendly municipal right by the river and a great little village. Swimming pool nearby and riverside walks. Watch the trees on entry. However, there are sites all along the river many on islands in the centre.
