The following is a copy of a post by Colin . Useful. "First you need to make sure the photo is smaller than 100kb, then when writing a reply, look just below the dialog box (just above 'submit' button) and you need to tick box 'attach file after posting', you will then be presented with a page which allows you to choose and submit photo

Thanks for the reply but I'm aware of what to do with pictures. The problem is Covid, it caused my whole system to change and I could not join in again, as I'd advanced a few years I started again, I had no choice; I'll be back when I can.

There are multiple ‘will” registered forum usernames - Will H, Will86, will87, will88 and will92 - and I’m guessing these are all yours (plus the many other names you’ve chosen to participate under over the years).

In 2016 you asked me whether I could alter your forum username from Will86 to Will87 to reflect the fact that your age had advanced by a year. I advised you that a forum moderator could not do this (and I’m doubtful that the forum administrator can either).

There’s nothing technically preventing an Out&AboutLive forum participant from having more than one username (though forums generally frown on this and, on some forums, it’s a capital offence) but the consequence is that each new username starts from scratch as far as their total number of posts and forum ‘rank’ are concerned. Your “Will86” username clocked up 1940 posts when you last used it in December 2020, but your latest “will92” username has just 3 posts recorded against it and its rank is “Just joined”.

As far as I can see your “Will86’ username is still alive and kicking and usable. If you’ve forgotten/lost the password for that username, it should be possible to recover it and that would allow you to continue to use “Will86” - but I can’t recover your password for you. Otherwise you’ll have to use “will92” and potentially be treated as a ‘newbie’ by people who aren’t aware of your history.

(Congratulations on reaching 92 - I suspect you are easily the oldest ever O&AL forum member.)

The Out&AboutLive forums have three ‘image’ features.

There is the ‘avatar’ image that displays to the left of a posting and an optional ‘personal’ image, - both of these are handled through the forum’s Control Panel. The criitical requirement is that the file-size in both cases must not exceed 50KB and although uploading an avatar or personal image should be successful the first time it is done, replacing the original image may well prove problematical.

The 3rd ‘image’ forum feature is for attaching files to a posting and the criticall requirement in this instance is that the file-size MUST NOT EXCEED 100KB.

Guidance on the ‘image’ features is provided within the Forums FAQ thread in the Forum User Guide at the top of the Forums homepage, but I’ll copy the advice below.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Q: HOW DO I ATTACH A FILE TO A FORUM POSTING?

A: The procedure for attaching a file to a forum posting is as follows:

1: Type the posting’s text into the Message box.

2: Tick the box titled "Attach a file after posting”.

3: Click the posting’s SUBMIT button.

An “Attach a file” box should now appear, When it does

4: Click on the “Choose File” button.

The response to clicking on the “Choose File” button will depend on the device you are using. But however your device (PC, Mac, tablet, phone) responds, you’ll need to identify and choose the file you want to attach. The file-name should now appear alongside the “Choose File” button. When it does

5: Click on the “Submit” button.

If the file you are trying to attach has a format that the forum’s software can handle, a message (in red) “Upload successful” should appear, plus information showing the name of the file and its size.

6: Now click on "Return to the thread” in the “Actions” box to complete the process. (If you want to attach several files, repeat actions 4 and 5 as necessary, and then click on "Return to the thread”.)

......................................................................................................................................

THE CRITICAL THING IS TO ENSURE THAT THE SIZE OF THE FILE BEING ATTACHED DOES NOT EXCEED 100KB

Attempting to attach a fairly large file with a size exceeding 100KB may produce the following error message

Request object error 'ASP 0104 : 80004005'

Operation not Allowed

/forums/includes/include-upload.asp, line 51

However, if the file is really large, the attachment process may fail with no error message and with “no file selected” appearing alongside the “Choose File” button.

......................................................................................................................................

If a file has a .jpg extension (eg. photo.jpg) the attached file-image should be permanently visible on the posting.

If a file has a .jpeg extension (eg. photo.jpeg) just the name of the file will be shown at the foot of the posting. If a forum-member then clicks on the file-name, the member’s own device (PC, Mac, tablet, etc.) will attempt to handle it and the image will normally become visible.

It is possible to attach other file-types provided that the file-size is no larger than 100KB. However, there is no certainty how the forums’ software will react.

Q: HOW DO I GET A PICTURE UNDER MY USERNAME WHEN I POST?

A: You can upload a small picture (normally called an avatar) via your Control Panel - scroll down to the 'Images' section (the last area on the page), and click the 'Browse' button in the 'Upload profile image' box. This will open up a 'file browser' window. Locate the image you wish to use as an avatar, click on it, and press the 'Open' button. The file browser window will close. Then just click the 'OK' button in the 'Upload profile image' box; your image will be saved to our servers, and your picture will appear next to your posts!

There are a couple of limitations: The image must not be larger than 50kb in filesize (this is to keep the loading speed of the pages as fast as possible). If the original image exceeds that size, it MUST be resized before it is uploaded. This can be done using variousl computer programs (such as Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Macromedia Fireworks, Paint Shop Pro, etc.). A way that I find useful for resizing jpg images for uploading when using Microsoft Windows without the need for image editing programs is to use the resizing feature that is built into the operating system:

1. Locate the image in 'file explorer'.

2. Right click it and a pop-up menu will appear.

3. Choose 'Send to' then 'Mail Recipient'.

4. A dialogue box will appear where you can choose to make the image file smaller.

5. Your email client program (Outlook, Outlook Express etc) should open and the smaller jpg file will be present as an attachment.

6. Right click it and drag it to a different folder to the original and you can post it to the forum from there.

This works for Windows XP and Windows 10 with more options in step 4 being available in Windows 10.

Hope this helps ;-)

I have used this for years

Image resizer

https://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/

Once installed you can just right click on a single image file or several by holding down shift, or ctrl and highlighting more files. Then you just resize them to whatever size you like. Generally for this site they need to be less than 800x600 to get below 100kb. Often even smaller than that.

If you are using macintosh, similar to Chris's response, drag an image file to an open mail document and you should get the resize option, small, medium, large or actual, cycling through them will show you the size. Then just drag the file to the desktop for future use. Just a shame other attachments are not as easy
