reversing mirror

At the back end of last year, our reversing mirror which fits over the screen mounted mirror, decided to cause the mirror glued to the screen to part company.

I found some special glue pads to re attach the mirror to the screen at Halfords, but yesterday, I found that the glue pad had given way again.

I guess that the weight of the reversing mirror and the original fixed mirror is too much for the glue pad, so has anyone any suggestions.

I think I need some extra strong bonding glue to reattach the mirror assembly.

It is possible to obtain ‘glass glue' (example here)

http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/sg_glass/overview/Loctite-Glass-Glue.htm

but I don’t know how effective that would be in your case.

As your 2009 Autocruise Stargazer is based on a Fiat Ducato, I’m a mite surprised that the mounting for the rear-view mirror parted from the windscreen as the fixing is pretty strong (unless the vehicle has had a replacement windscreen at some stage).

Suggest you contact a windscreen replacement specialist and ask what they recommend you use.

Thanks for the suggestion.

perhaps I did not explain too clearly.

the fiat original bonded rear view mirror, has the supplementary rear camera device which clips over the original fiat fitted mirror, and is quite heavy relative to the original mirror, and it is this extra weight which has caused the original fixing to fail..

I am wondering if something like Araldite 2 part mix glue might be strong enough, or even instant locktite glue.

the difficulty is really holding the mirror in position while the glue sets..I need to devise something to hold it in position until the glue goes off..in this cold weather, not an attractive prospect..

once the weather gets warmer, I will try again.

I’ve no difficulty understanding your problem, but I was under the impression that a 2009 Ducato’s rear-view mirror was not ‘glued’ in its entirety directly to the windscreen glass. That’s certainly the case with my 2015 X290 Ducato, where there’s a ‘hex nut’ mount glued to the windscreen glass and the mirror’s ’stalk’ then attaches to that mount.

Removal of a Ducato X290 mirror was mentioned in this 2015 forum thread

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Rearview-mirror-on-x290/38474/

and I note that the original posting there said "Does anyone know how to remove the rear view mirror on the new x290. It doesn't appear to slide off like on the x250.

There’s also this 2007 forum thread asking about removing the mirror from a 2004 Ducato

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Rearview-Mirror-removal/7376/

with the final posting saying

"I think you said that your base vehicle is based on the Fiat Ducato, I had a 2000 model base vehicle and to remove the mirror was not a problem. The stalk of the mirror was fixed to the base (attached to the screen) by a type of sliding dovetail. If I pushed mine up it simply came away leaving the base on the screen."

The in-bold comments above suggest that the rear-view mirrors of Ducatos since (at least) Year 2000 have had '2-part fixing' - a mount glued to the windscreen and the stalk of the mirror then being attached to that mount.

So (assuming that your Ducato’s mirror has 2-part fixing) you would only need to hold the mount in position on the windscreen while the glue sets, not the complete mirror assembly.

Further to the saga of trying to refix the rearview mirror to the windscreen

my attempt with Araldite held it in place for about 3 days, but I found it hanging loose again .

I have tried several different glues, but there is nothing that will hold the mirror bonding to the screen.

my latest attempt is to forget the original mirror, and fabricate a couple of brackets, which hang over the windscreen blinds assembly and are glued in position, and then the heavier supplemantary reversing mirror assembly is supported on these brackets. I need to adjust the angle of the brackets to angle the mirror assembly so as to give a view of the rear window at the kitchen end of the van.

So far the fixings have held ok, 3 days, ,

then I need to adjust the rear camera to look more to the rear, rather than down on the bike rack.. I cant yet find a way of doing that, so thinking about adding a second camera....

A wireless type to avoid cabling issues.
