West Coast of Scotland update

We live on the Isle of Bute and have easy access to Highlands and Islands. During the past 2 seasons we have visited Islay 4 times (have a friend in Bowmore), New Year (boozy but magic), Malt Whisky Festival and Jazz Festival. All good times. Nice island, friendly folk and 2 good campsites although there are places to camp alone.

Followed Andy Stothert's route up through the Western Isles last year, visited an oldfreind on Barra. Vatersay is a must see place as is Berneray which was our favorite. Only one campsite which is at Benbecula but we didn't stay (although called Shell Beach it isn't on the beach, no view but adequate facilities). Wild camping is the norm on the Western Isles and there are chemical disposal facilities and water to be found. Be tidy and considerate and you will be welcome.

Travelled up to Durness earlier this year. Wester Ross is wonderful. Good sites at Gairloch, Clactoll Bay, Ullapool, Ben Nevis and Durness.

Ullapool site is right beside the loch and only a couple of minutes walk into the town centre. Ben Nevis site is huge with smaller zones within it masking the size. Very dog friendly with many bins equipped with free dump bags. Jim, who owns the Clactoll Bay site is very friendly and constantly adding to the facilities. The site closer to Lochinver is very ANTI dogs, but is 2 miles down a single lane road before you find that out!

Although we didn't wild camp on this trip, site fees were very reasonable and lower than CC or CCC fees.

Before I sign off just a mention of the great sites at Kirkcudbright and New England Bay on the Mull of Galloway.

And. What does Atilla Fag Ash call Mr Stothert???????

Awra best - Slainte.
