Family tents for first timers

Is there anybody who has bought a family tent recently, who would either recommend it wholeheartedly, or alternatively, who realises with hindsight that they made a mistake?

With the second point, I'm not really looking for any horror stories concerning snapped guy ropes or leaky seams; it's the buying decisions I'm thinking about, where your experience might be of help to others.

For instance:

Did anybody buy a tent that looked great on the display ground, but took about two hours to put up when you got it onto the site?

Did you suddenly discover when it was too late, that the sleeping compartments were too small to fit an inflatable mattress inside?

Did you find that it became so noisy in windy weather that you were unable to sleep at night?

Did you find that you were unable to get in and out of the tent in wet weather without the rain getting into the living area?

Has anybody who previously owned a polyester tent decided that it was worth the extra expense to change to polycotton?

As the opposite of this, did anybody have a polycotton tent and find that good quality polyester suited them better.

Finally, what is the best piece of advice that you could give to anybody who is intending to go camping this year for the first time?
