Leading retail bosses, including the chief executives of Sainsbury’s, Asda, Marks & Spencer, the Co-op and Waitrose, have written to the government warning of significant disruption to food supplies in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

It will put inevitable pressure on food prices from higher transport costs, currency devaluation and tariffs.

£120 billion quids worth of food per year, 500 truck loads an hour every day, 25% of UK-EU trade......and that's just at Eurotunnel.

Time this utter insanity was brought to an end and commonsense restored before we end up as a third world country with shop shelves looking like this.

I see the "new scare a day" campaign is still growing strong.

We should run a book and see who can come up with tomorrows scare story.

The BBC 6 o'clock news gave it a fair bit of exposure and a teeny weeny bit of time to hear from the people who thought it would be good news (from Farmers especially). More excellent neutral reporting from the BBC.

Remember the lead up to Y2K. The world would never be the same! No country or company wants to lose any business so my guess is that the potential for delays of freight at the border issue will be sorted very quickly.
The issue I see being top of the list to sort is the border in Ireland. I do not know the answer and I suspect no one else does. The last thing you want is violence but you need to take control of your border otherwise the whole exercise is futile. The way I see it if there is no hard border then you are inviting entry via the back door!  The only solution I can think of is to leave Ireland with a soft border but make entry from Nth & Sth Ireland to England, Scotland & Wales via a customs point. Not sure how the folk from Nth Ireland would feel about that but just maybe it could be a reasonable compromise.  Brexit is a fascinating issue as was our governments position on "offshore detention " of refugees. Cheers,

The only real solution to the NI border is staying in the Customs Union and Single Market (or staying in the EU full stop). What I find hilarious is the ERG and big Brexiteers for two years kept banging on about how easy it would be resolve with technology but are now throwing their toys out of the pram over the backstop which is odd as surely once they have delivered this fantastic technological solution there would be no need for the backstop. Caught with their pants down over that one as it never existed and likely never will.

As for Y2K I worked on that for two years as part of a steering group of 22 companies. Similar groups worked all over the world in preparation for it well in advance of the actual event which is probably why much of the chaos was avoided. If we had prepared for that like we have prepared for Brexit it probably would have been a disaster.

So again (for those who struggle with reading and general comprehension)
"...good news that has come about *BECAUSE of Brexit (and not despite of it)."

That Port Talbot re-fit was happening anyway.
It wasn't happening because we were leaving the EU..
Their Chief Exec, Hans Fischer (ooer, sounds a bit foreign) said he was "really worried" about a possible hard Brexit.
quote- "If our customers are affected very heavily it leads to disturbance in the supply chain and so a disturbance in our production.
"In the short term, I'm really worried about it. I hope we get a last-minute deal and not a hard Brexit."

I know it's the way some Leavers like to operate...but they can't have things both ways
They can't dismiss company relocations as having nothing at all to do with us leaving the EU one minute and then the next, claim that a company that is already here, IS here due to us leaving.

Simples enough to accept forms of ID other than a passport for UK citizens and have three lanes at every entry point to UK mainland - one for UK citizens, one for EU citizens and one for others.

If business takes notice of our bitter remain politicians , remain business leaders , BofE remain Govenor and MSM campaign to trash leaving then obviously business is going to be very wary to invest ... Surely thats common sense ... If as I hope and we leave with a no deal and as I and others suspect that the world wont crash in then business will invest ... Success or failure one things for sure the likes of you wont be happy either way

We've flown to Belfast and back and the airport security at each end was very tight. We have passports so it was no problem for us but for UK citizens travelling within the UK why should they need to buy a passport when there may well be far less expensive ways of estabishing who you are by photocard - driving licence, bas pass, even library card?

Good news for the South West hoteliers and campsites I guess if bookings really are up 40%, I assume that perhaps other UK holiday spot bookings will also be up then. Not so good news if your trying to get there when those roads get gridlocked normally anyway but with 40% extra traffic? Best not take your motorhome then. Looks like next summer might be a bit crowded here in the UK and no escape to mainland Europe in your van if these queues that are predicted prove anywhere near true and then there is the predicted further fall in the exchange rate, rise in fuel prices and cost of everything when you get there, different driving licence requirements for different countries, 90 day limit, no EHIC card. I bet loads of motorhomers dont bother. Skeggy will be bursting!

We can look forward to the return of Kiss me quick hats, Green Flares, Party 7 cans of "ale", saucy post cards and sitting in the pissing rain with a hanky on your head on a crowded beach next to a freezing North sea! Lovely. Those migrants that are coming here want to hang onto those rubber dinghies they will be worth a fortune come the holidays.

It might work if very carefully promoted so that the DUP didn't notice. Not quite sure how that could be done, but doubtless you'll explain!

But, if they did notice, and because they have already vehemently dismissed the idea of a border down the Irish Sea (which is what it would create), it wouldn't pass the "Theresa May / DUP confidence and supply agreement continuance requirements", so POP goes the government's majority.

General election anyone? As I keep saying, be careful what you wish for!

According to our local BBC news a couple of weeks ago holiday bookings in the South West are up 40% on this time last year.......Because of Brexit ..........

Jaywick "Riviera"?

Apparently Skeggy is the Brexiters choice with plenty of amusement arcades, greasy spoon cafs serving over priced slop on a plate and mugs of tea, discount stores flogging tat, donkeys on the beach, and superb coastal scenery of gigantic windmills plonked in the sea.

Asked if he was worried Skegness would not get any European visitors, local councillor David Cargill said, "i think we will get more".
Wonder if he's told the locals that so they can get the barricades and guard towers ready?

So you're now deciding on Wales in preference to Spain, Dave?

As long as they serve bacon butties, burgers 'n chips and warm beer. But the locals speak 'foreign' and Pelmet needs to be among Englanders.

It seems that although you remainers often tease Dave about his geography you need to look a a map Wales due west even from East Sussex Jaywick south east coast the south west is normally seen to be Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. and there is nowt wrong with Skeggy(east coast) if you like tha sort of thing, at least they normally pick up the dog poo unlike the French riviera where you play dodge the drop.

Just remember not to come whining on here about rising costs.

The supermarkets say there will be price rises then put them up self serving prophesy my wife tells me Sainsburys have put up Bisto gravy granules by just over 25% since late December and we ain't left yet Her shopping today at Waitrose much cheaper so it's loss covering realy.

Of course patriots should have holidays Dave, great, glorious, pro patria holidays, union flag holidays, holidays here:

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house
Against the envy of less happier lands;
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,
this nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings,
Feared be their breed and famous by their birth,
Renowned for their deeds as far from home
For Christian service and true chivalry
As is the sepulchre, in stubborn Jewry,
Of the world’s ransom, blessed Mary’s son;
This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out – I die pronouncing it –
Like to a tenement or a pelting farm.
England, bound in with the triumphant sea,
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds.
That England that was wont to conquer others
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.

What's not to like, except the all too true last stanza, that Brexit brings true on leaden wings? (Apologies to my mate Bill )

But you're right, Europe is for the rest of us, whose eyes can see the far horizon, not those who eyes are as fractured glass, that perceive nothing save their present comfort.

You have to start ignoring the usual suspects blithering nonsense as their literacy level is not too good and they won't listen to audio or tv news channel links of people who actually know what they're talking about....like this chap.

Listen to this guy who called into the James O'Brien show. He's a fruit and veg buyer for a major Supermarket.

We should buy our own seasonal produce and let the EU farmers worry about selling their own produce, if they want to sell to us they'll have to come up with some sort of deal that appeals to the UK

But you're right, Europe is for the rest of us, whose eyes can see the far horizon, not those who eyes are as fractured glass, that perceive nothing save their present comfort.

You've certainly made a huge 'success' at chasing billions of pounds worth of business out of the country, not to mention jobs, much of which we are unlikely to ever see back here again.

Have we?............Cant say I've noticed .........

What huge damage? ...........I haven't seen any? ...........

£64.5 billion over the past two years, over 250 companies relocating to Netherlands, €800 billion of UK banking left UK for Germany, another €190 billion shifted out by one bank alone yesterday, Barclays, to Dublin, automotive industry packing up and leaving, Airbus on the brink of relocating......the list is endless and growing daily.

The only reason you "haven't seen any damage" is because you've shut your eyes to the reality and remain in a state of stubborn denial.

They didn't vote for this mess.....you lot did. We had a "deal" with EU which was working, then you lot screwed it all up and made a total mess. It's about time you owned up to it instead of constant blame shifting.

Interesting piece on the news today, the Dutch are already working on a electronic tag system which will mean no holdups for perishable items sent to UK.

Listen to what Doug Bannister says on that clip i posted.....that's mentioned, but it's important to hear all of what Bannister and Mr James say.

Staggering!! A Brexit zealot commenting about the food supply problems to supermarkets;

"Its all scaremongering. As far as i'm concerned it would do the country good to go without for a little while. Make them appreciate what they've had"

So people who didn't appreciate what they had, want the rest of us to suffer with them to appreciate the things we already appreciated with the EU!

Of course you haven't for the reason i stated which you quoted, that you remain in a state of stubborn denial parroting the worn out mantra of 'project fear' and 'remoaner propaganda', unable to bring anything remotely resembling one single credible point to the threads as logic flew out the window with you long ago. You're following a cult and been brainwashed into flat denial of the realities occurring daily. The only 'logic' you persist with is as Brian said,, chop logic, despite being shown the huge amounts of damage being caused right now.

I'm still waiting for you to post up any link on news regarding a European company moving it's business to UK due to Brexit but as i asked that days ago a number of times and you've failed to show me one company, i have to conclude you were unable to find any at all which doesn't surprise me.

Yeah all that stuff that nugget in the video filmed comes through on zero tariffs currently because the EU has a free trade deal with them. Not so under WTO unless your going to offer Zero tariffs for everyone.

They are simply moving their US offices to London and the business remains registered in France. Keep trying though....it's entertaining watching you desperately searching for a straw.

Not quite the EU 0% tariffs are restricted to a given quota what happens if that quota is exceeded I admit I don't know but I doubt 0% will continue to apply..
