Not me..this is America....don’t panic. Anyway doesn’t affect scarecrows.
You can see the details of how Trump manipulates. Couldn’t even admit the truth with a health expert next to him.

Death rate is impossible to calculate.
Probably many mild cases not reported causing over estimation
People who have survived so far may die from it in the future causing under estimation
We may get a vaccine
etc

They say the mortality rate is 2%, Flu is 0.1% I think but as you say many more could have it and not even know they have had it. Most of us have probably had a "Corona Virus" at some point, I think a large
number of colds are Corona Viruses.

Some interesting stuff here https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/why-its-too-early-to-compare-covid-19-with-the-flu

Whats also worrying is the economic impact. If they start shutting down travel, entire cities and places like china grind to a halt. Apparently thats why petrol went down this week. Less demand for oil in china.

Britain particularly vulnerable because of its gig economy.
Over a million workers who don't get sick pay,so might have to carry on working.
And most are in close contact with others.

But world population growth is unsustainable.
We are already seeing results in housing crisis, mass starvation, deforestation, global warming etc.
The old and weak have to die to make way for the next generation.
Its the natural cycle
Is Coronavirus Gods way of solving the problem thats too difficult for populist politicians to deal with?

Well it could well be. John might be right. If millions die and If the entire world gets grounded and the giant industrial sausage machine grinds to a halt we will all be cast back to the stone age. The planet will self heal. I intend to go out this afternoon and stock up on essentials like Scotch, Cheese and crisps as well as a massive generator and a huge tanker of petrol. Well someone has to keep Rock music alive.

That's an important fact folk need to bear in mind.

Still no sign of those "40 brand new hospitals" Johnson promised though.

No,but the staff are on their way...from the Med.

Thats good news as the NHS badly needs staff but also more funding and new hospitals built.

UNISON health officer Guy Collis said: “A decade of Tory underfunding has left our NHS struggling to cope and this is having a damaging impact on its devoted workforce.

“Ongoing understaffing means we are more dependent than ever on the goodwill of health workers.”

Well put it this way, I hardly ever get colds which is basically often a corona virus and never had the flu. Everyone just stick to a diet of cheese and Scotch and you will be fine.

On a serious note if one fifth of the work force get sick as suggested might happen that's 6 million people. If twenty percent need hospital care that's still well over a million. How will an NHS that already has people lying around in lobbies cope?

Of course its not disrespectful! Its a fact that in ten years the Tories have run the health service down to the bones and now all of a sudden there is potentially a huge pandemic crisis on the horizon. If people end up lying around and dying in hospital car parks (assuming they can get anywhere near them) then its no good saying "ah well its not our fault, its a virus".

On the one hand we are lucky as we have an NHS. If it becomes widespread in the USA who is going to look after the sick that have no insurance but if our NHS is already stretched it wont cope either. Johnson says its ready but I think I saw something yesterday from a survey of Nhs staff who say its just not.

China managed to build an entire hospital in six days. The Tories promised us 40 so maybe they should get cracking. One a week might do it. Oh wait.. We sent all the EU nurses packing and stopped the nurse training funding and bursaries. :( Nobody to staff them

Realised today, reading that those over 60 are more susceptible to covid-19, it's Mother Nature sorting her planet out. Kill off the old buggers who constantly failed to stop polluting Earth, taking away habitat so species go extinct and changing the climate. Then let children, who apparently are less likely to get infected for reasons unknown, take over.

On a slightly more serious note, one the one hand the government hopes to recruit volunteers to help, and advises over 60s to be particularly careful to avoid places where they could get infected. Duh, most volunteers are over 60! including the recently retired doctors and nurses they hope to get back to work.

That’s the end of global warming then.

A good percentage of alcohol kills bacteria and viruses. So probably Scotch and some cheep vodka to clean hands and surfaces is a good idea.....a few chugs also won’t hurt ...cheers.

The NHS will cope the same as all other countries health services I presume ... Very disrespectful and hateful to play politics with the virus , youve obviously got that from your organ grinder boyfriend who has done the same with this issue and shockingly Grenfell ... Hate on Barry

Surest way to get people to panic buy is to tell them not to panic buy.
Now the BBC are pouring petrol on the fire by showing pictures of empty supermarket shelves as well
The media is probably doing more damage than the virus

But is it panic buying? If people reason that the virus will spread - which we authoritatively advised it will - and then reason that means they may contract it - which is logical - they will recognise that they may at some point need to self-isolate for 14 days.

Since it is a tad difficult to nip down to the shops while self-isolating, it then appears logical to do so now, and pick up sufficient of the non-perishables while a) they can, and b) supplies are still available, so that what supplies they will need to obtain while self-isolating for 14 days are the minimal perishables.

Calling that panic buying seems condescending towards people who seem to me merely to be sensibly preparing for the more or less inevitable. Funny things, human beings, aren't they?

I think a week or so ago it was panic buying as few were self isolating or even thinking about it. Now it has settled down although there is no pasta but it’s probably because none is coming from Italy.
My brother near Washington DC has settled in for. 2 to 3 month self isolation ,though his place is remote they and their kids can work on the Internet. So multiple trips in the van for us .......after we get back from Mallorca.......if it doesn’t get cancelled.

Good point as usual.
Some have been buying a lot more than 14 days supply though.
Markets have dropped another 20% since Donald Trump advised us to 'buy the dip' *-)
In the space of 12 days he has gone from calling it a Democrat 'Hoax' to banning travel to Europe
Only Britain and Ireland where there are Trump resorts is excluded from his ban *-)
What will he do next ...

I think you meant from Europe rather than to, but that and the fact weaponising the virus is his way of having a poke at the EU he so despises. Everyone, apart from his servile sheep, immediately saw through that when he exempted UK! It would be farcical if it wasn't so childish.

Ireland is closing down all its schools and Sturgeon is considering banning gatherings of 500 or more. Hopefully she will ban Trump from jetting in to his golf course too.

Having just been to Morrisons,it is stacked full of toilet paper, pallets and pallets in the isles. I do think the press has a degree of responsibility here when they show one supermarket with empty shelves and don’t report on the many others that have a plentiful supply. That is what causes panic buying.....No pasta though.

I've been shopping online at Morrisons the past four month and this is their current stock of toilet roll....out of 45 brands/sizes, just five available;

https://groceries.morrisons.com/search?entry=toilet%20roll

Like toilet roll, pasta will fly off the shelves as it's non-perishable.

Just read a post on another forum whose nephew works at Heathrow and showing symptomatic signs of Covid-19, been told to go home and self-isolate as there's no testing available. His eldest son and 68 year old MIL also symptomatic.

Over 70s to be told to self-isolate for months even if not ill

The government measure for people over the age of 70 is likely to be enforced within the next 20 days and will be instructed soon by the government to stay in strict isolation for four months as part of a planned response to coronavirus.

Quite how they will police that is another matter. Not enough police as government got shut of 20,000 so perhaps what troops we have left will be out on the streets.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/breaking-coronavirus-over-70s-told-21694397#source=push

Other measures being planned included the forced requisitioning of hotels and other buildings as temporary hospitals and the requisitioning of private hospitals.

What happened to those "40 new hospitals" the blond buffoon promised over five months ago? Still not one single brick laid.

Disturbing Breaking News;

A biopharmaceutical based in Germany reportedly rejected a proposal by the US to purchase the exclusive rights to a coronavirus vaccine, according to the German news organization Mannheimer Morgen.

CureVac AG, a vaccine and therapeutics developer headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, was approached by the Trump administration to bring the company to the US, in exchange for funding, according to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

A German official reportedly claimed that Trump was trying to obtain the scientist's research exclusively, and that the administration wanted to get a potential vaccine "only for the United States."

Yes, I read that this morning. It really is unbeliveable. Hopefully, the Germans will be able to persuade the company to continue to work to produce the virus for world consumption....although perhaps the US could be charged 4 times the price of other countries.
Johnson is happy to develop a strategy which will kill off the old and the sick so that the demand on social care will be considerably reduced. I think us oldies should make sure we self isolate and survive despite Johnson's attempt at mass murder. Cummings is behind the strategy of course and Johnson's experts are all yes men given that he sacked anyone who stood up to him or who tried to ensure the truth mattered. It is such a shame that at this time of national crisis the population cannot trust the corrupt liar leading the country.

Disturbing Breaking News;

Similarly with the NHS he believed to be "on the table", he thinks he can behave the same with Germany but Economy minister Peter Altmaier said, ‘Germany is not for sale’ as he reacted to yesterday’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper headline ‘Trump vs Berlin’.

This is a timeline of Trumps statements on Covid-19;

Instead of spewing hate as is the norm for the squad time might be better spent asking for forgiveness and making up with those we've lost contact with ... Just a thought but if hate and anger still need to be spewed then try throwing it in the direction of the Chinese authorities who it seems tried very hard to keep the lid on Coronavirus and therefore have endangered the rest of the world ... Hate on , if you must

Don’t see that hate or anger have anything to do with it. We are talking about ridiculous statements from an individual who holds the highest office in America. I haven’t lost contact with anyone and who exactly are we asking forgiveness from.

They've good reason not to be too. Some friends of mine work as site wardens part time and still waiting to hear from the site owners over what they are doing as they usually start in April. They are going to phone them as they've had no reply to emails.

Idiots who went out on the lash tonight showed complete lack of responsibility. Our NHS is already at breaking point without having these selfish loons to contend with, not to mention the obvious risks of increasing and spreading the virus further.

Covid-19 killed 627 people in Italy in the last 24 hours; nearly one every 2 minutes.

The virus is spreading faster in UK than it did in Italy.

Which idiot decided it was a good idea to shut the pubs on a Friday night? It doesnt take a genius to work out that yesterday at say 5pm would have been much more sensible. It wasnt even a proper order from Johnson. Just something along the lines of just close sometime tonight when you can. Hundreds of thousands will have headed out for a final pub blow out which could have been totally avoided.

Doctors battling coronavirus in Italy are ‘at the end of their strength’

Romano Paolucci, who came out of retirement to help with the country’s response to the virus, described the heartbreak of having to see elderly patients dying alone, often after having to say goodbye to loved ones over a scratchy phone line.

He is one of 70 doctors working long and exhausting shifts at the small Oglio Po Hospital, which until only a month ago was a normal provincial institution treating everything from tonsils to tumours.

Now, it has been totally converted to treat coronavirus as Cremona became the fourth-worst impacted province in Italy. There have been so many fatalities in the region that medics are ‘not even counting the dead anymore’.

Italy saw yet another record spike in Covid-19-related deaths on Saturday as almost 800 more patients died of the virus in 24 hours.

https://tinyurl.com/tfvk22r

Italy, France, Spain and UK were all slow to react where China hit the lockdown button after 30 deaths and still had almost 3000 fatalities where Italy's has now almost doubled that at 5,476.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/

South Korea has done exceptionally well with just 104 deaths......but they introduced large scale testing and tracing very early on. Lessons to be learned from there.

Probably returning non-resident Britons same as those that stubbornly refused to budge from Spain until the last minute. At least China has their country under control after imposing strict lockdown early on and their only new cases have been citizens returning from outside China........the same as our returning citizens are doing, the majority of which are non-resident Brits coming back from Spain but unlike China we allow ours to amble in unchecked and untested.

The death toll in Spain has now passed 2000 with 462 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Wake up UK.

MPs demand Boris Johnson puts UK in lockdown as social distancing advice goes ignored

It's about time Johnson stopped dithering and pussy footing around.

https://tinyurl.com/wl3ljty

People are not bothering with 'advice'. "Social distancing" is treated as a joke. Over the weekend people flocked to coastal resorts...even Skegness FGS(!!), and Snowdonia national park recorded it's busiest day. Bikers rammed Matlock in the Peak District for their customary Sunday gathering. Campervans, motorhomes, caravans and second home owners took to the roads to plonk themselves in areas emergency services and hospitals are not equipped to deal with.

Italy has people dying in the streets now while *some* Brits carry on as though life is normal.

A 36 year old NHS nurse is critically ill battling coronavirus using a ventilator in intensive care in the same hospital she has worked at for 16 years.

She has no underlying health issues.

My understanding is thats because those working with so many infected people would have got a massive onslaught of the virus before they could build up any immunity - far more than the average person might have got.

The point being John is age. Yes a younger person who contracts the virus should have more chance of recovery than someone much older. I also think it far too early to assess immunity if any at all and i've not heard any virologists make clear statements on that yet. There have been another 45 deaths in England alone today ages from 47 to 105 and the total death toll 335.

Strict rules banning social interaction.

Gatherings of more than two people banned. (It will be interesting to see how that is enforced given this weekends activities up and down the country).

All “non-essential” shops will be closed, with only food stores, hardware shops, chemists, petrol stations and newsagents allowed to remain open.

Though the article is about Piers Morgan who has offered to pay NHS workers who pick up car park fines, there is an interesting list of countries around the world and the measures each government has introduced.

Jeremy Hunt MP asked Johnson at PMQ when we can get routine testing in the community as happens in Korea, Germany and other countries, and should we not have weekly tests for NHS staff and others that need it" to which Johnson replied, "we're making huge progress err err as soon as we possibly can".

Johnson was asked this a number of times by ministers and Political editor Gary Gibbon put the point to him again and asks how we became "so woefully behind other countries..", but yet more bluster and huffing with no clear decisive answer.

I fear we are facing a Tsunami with this pandemic and that is the most appropriate description i can think of as i remember watching that unfold in 2004. First it was feared 50 or so had died but that quickly rose into the hundreds, then thousands until the eventual toll reached almost 228,000.

Unlike the Tsunami Covid-19 didn't come rushing in without warning as this timeline shows. We should have been prepared but we were not, neither with manpower or equipment.

An interesting read from The Atlantic;

How the Coronavirus Became an American Catastrophe

The death and economic damage sweeping the United States could have been avoided—if only we had started testing for the virus sooner.

Hopefully each fm posting here will keep on thread topic to post specifically about matters concerning Covid-19. Stuart opened what imo is an excellent thread so lets keep it that way by posting current updates relating to Coronavirus.

Spains healthcare system is now on the verge of collapse as hospital staff struggle to cope with the pandemic. 8,578 new cases in 24 hours and a death toll of 4.089.

Noted a reference to the UKs gig economy and wondered what on earth is that. Turns out is just means self employed people which is nothing new. I gather the number of self employed people is going up and I guess emerging technology might have something to do with that. Lots of people I knew in construction management were free lancers who generally got paid a good daily rate but had to set something aside for holidays and time off sick so concerns about people feeling they have to keep working or not get paid is down to their personal financial management. If they chose to spend every penny they earn leaving nothing for contingencies surely that is their problem, not ours.

Its not quite as simple as that. Choosing to be self employed and set up a business is not the same as the so called "Gig economy" where you are really just after a job but end up on a zero hours self employed contract. For many its not a personal choice. As for planning in contingencies some cant even afford housing let alone holidays and are living in their cars or tents.

Noted a reference to the UKs gig economy and wondered what on earth is that. Turns out is just means self employed people which is nothing new...…….…………………..

It is, as Barry says, a bit more than just that. "Gigs" are one night stand performances by musicians or groups, some of whom are paid from the proceeds only, and then only if the performance earns more than its set-up costs. So casual employment with no security and no certainty of payment.

The advent, as Barry says, of zero hours contracts, where there is no guarantee of employment beyond that offered on the day, and where the individual is expected to be available on demand or will be removed from the employer's list of available workers (think Deliveroo, Uber, etc. but also casual labour in construction, the "black gangs" etc.) led to the term "gig economy" being used as a catch-all for that kind of employment, because those engaged in it had no contracts and hence no reliable source of income.
