overnighting near Cherbourg

Hi All

We will be returning home from our first trip to France in July via Cherbourg and was wondering if it is possible to stay at or near the port overnight. We would only consider doing so if it was safe to stay.

Any information will be very welcome, thanks.

Hi Bob,

There are a couple of French Aires very close to the channel port.  These may help:-

Aire de Parking at Urville-nacqueville - http://www.airecampingcar.com/aire_camping_car_gps.php/2181?z=9

(Aire de Parking are places where a car (and therefore a motorhome) can park overnight).

Aire de Service at Tourlaville - http://www.airecampingcar.com/aire_camping_car_gps.php/2149?z=9

(Aire de Services are places where water can be filled/emptied (including toilet)).

Bob:

Received wisdom is that the car parks at the Cherbourg ferry-port itself are no longer a good place for motorhomes to park overnight due to the presence there of 'undesirables'. (Certainly we wouldn't stay there nowadays.)

I don't know what the parking situation is at Urville-Nacqueville, but I have happily overnighted (though not for a year or two) on the Centre Nautique car-park at Tourlaville next to the aire de services. This is quite close to the ferry-port but, if you are prepared to be a little further away, you could try St Pierre Eglise as that would (probably) be quieter.

Suggest you visit www.campingcar-infos.com as that website provides up-to-date details of aires/parkings, plus photos and directional maps.
