Heater leak - help!

Hi all

Can anybody point me in the direction of info on how to get at the heater matrix under the dashboard as I have a small leak (just a drip when engine is cold). I have tried a search of the forum (as usual got server error).

Enquired at the local garage where I have 'van serviced they said part costs about £40 but taking the dash apart to get access is a day's work £400 !!!! Garage also says that Bars Leaks may not effect a good repair as the seals may have failed which would not be repaired by such treatment.

It is a Ducato 2004 2 litre JTD. Perhaps someone has the relevant part of the manual to guide me through the process which I am thinking of doing anyway but just taking dash apart bit by bit until I get to the offending part.

Any help would be welcome please.

I'd go for the bars leak (or similar product) first. If it fixes it all well and good if it don't then nothing lost but a few quid. Getting to the heater matrix is a real pain, all the dash has to come out usually and they rarely go back exactly the same. My daily driver Escort had a slight leak on the heater matrix and I didn't fancy spending two days stripping the dash out and re-installing it for a small leak. Put a tin of some cooling system leak stopper in (can't remember the name) and in a couple of days the leak had stopped.

I would be very careful about putting any radseal into the cooling system. I had a repair to a brand new 1.9Td 2001 Peugeot Autocruise Starfire, because the factory had fitted an incorrect flexible pipe to an Eberspacher wet heating system.

The Eberspacher engineer fitted the correct replacement flexible tube and refilled/topped up the cooling system with BluCol antifreeze. The next few months saw the cooling system overheating on steep hills.

The problem turned out to be a reaction between the Peugeot antifreeze and the BluCol antifreeze, the mixture coagulated and partially blocked the very fine matrix tubes in the radiator.

The only remedial action was to drain refill and flush the entire cooling system, then fill with one type of Antifreeze. Peugeot do warn operators of their vehicles not to mix antifreeze - Putting another chemical into the system with the hope it might block a hole in the matrix, might not be a good idea. - Sorry

I'm with Dave. I keep a bottle of sealant in the motorhome called K-Seal.

Its made in the USA and any good Motor Factors should stock it. Its better than Bars Leak and will permanently seal the leaking heater matrix......or Dave will give you your money back !

A couple of years ago, I gave half my bottle to a fella in Portugal who had a leaking head gasket. It fixed the leak and when I spoke to him recently, its still not leaking.

As Daves points out, you've only lost a couple of pounds if it doesn't do the job & with Dave's guarantee...it won't even cost you that !!! :-D

Just seen Terry's post. I've got the bottle in front of me & it says "mixes with all types of antifreeze".
