Hopesy Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 We're off in a few weeks travelling Dover to Calais. We're making for Bairritz area eventually and retuning from Bilbao. I'm after any suggestions on Aires/stopovers about 6hrs drive away from Calais, perhaps the Angers, Saumur area (don't know because we haven't used Aires before). Are they still busy In late August/September (saw a couple in Annecy earlier this year and you couldn't fit a fag paper between units). We're going to use commercial sites for longer stays but any suggestions would be gratefully received. (?)
Bill Ord Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi, Try the Aire de Repose at St. Maure de Touraine. It's well signed from the main road which used to be the N 10 but is now D 910. It's at parking Ronsard at the junction with Rue Doctor Patry Sat nav. Latitude : (Nord) 47.11083° Décimaux ou 47° 6' 38.988'' Longitude :(Est) 0.61611° Décimaux ou 0° 36' 57.996'' There are always a few vans there at night and good boulangery near by. Bill Ord

robertandjean Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi, Never mind buying the book! In area you mention agree that St Maure de Touraine is a good overnight stop (signed as parking/picnic area but is a proper aire de service with watwr etc at no charge) Others we have stayed on include: Cehille Change (2.5 Euros inc services). Nice village north of Angers of the N162. Chateau Goniter. On river with nice views (Free but only allowed between 17.00 and 10.00. Again north of Angers on the N162. La Suze-sur-Sarth. Between Angers and Le Mans off D23 (Dept 72). Nice setting near river and easy walk to town. Parking costs 3 Euros for 24 hours but includes electric hook-up (How's that for value! Worth 2 or 3 days stay. Can catch train into Le Mans). Other services free. Hope this helps. Any other areas just ask, as spend 5/6 months in France each year on the aires. Regarding will the aires be busy? Well yes many are though ones inland away from major tourist destinations do tend to be best. But for all arrive by 16.00 and you should be O.K. apart from some on coast when we find just before or after lunch gives the best chance. Jean and Robert

Hopesy Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 Thanks for the replies and suggestions by coincidence we've stayed just outside St Maure a couple of years back. Don I've bought the book and map but i was just after some personal recommendations or suggestions as we've not done it before. I'll certainly be using the guide. Mom very tempted by french passion scheme especially as my wife's French is quite good but i think we need a bit more confidence first.
BrianR Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 As your wife's french is good, you will find almost all the aires in France listed, and many reviewed by french camping-carists, on http://www.campingcar-infos.com/index1.htm I can recommend the aire at Turquant (10kms upriver from Saumur). This is a trogledyte village. The one just before at Parnay is on the main road and noisy. Another good one is Montreuil-Belay, on the river and by an interesting chateau. Le Coudray, between Saumur and Montreuil is also a quiet stop.
