British Gas have just announced a increase of 35% for domestic users. Can someone tell me how this can be justified, and how will the government work this one into their 'official' inflation index.

A spokesperson for British Gas has just said on the news that gas prices have gone up 100%.

If they are only putting up their prices by 35% it makes you wonder what sort of mark-up they put on it!

Hope you've all got 'capped' tariffs, because the rest are going to put their prices up tomorrow apparently.

It can't be justified, Howie. My heart goes out to all small businesses who just can't possibly keep prices down with all that is going on, and thereby cannot hope to compete with the big boys.

Think we are on the point of no return sadly.....

Thankfully we took the option in 2006 (I think, might have been 07 though) to fix our gas and electricity prices until 2010 so for the next two years we're sitting pretty :D . We do however do everything realistically possible to minimise our energy usage, despite having a 21 year old son still in the house. Why can't they open the curtains in the morning instead of turning the light on? >:-(

We're signed up to the 2010 deal too thank goodness BUT what a shock we will have then! 8-) Our bills will probably double.

Just before I heard about the increase I had arrived home to find a package containing free energy saving light bulbs from - British Gas - along with advice on insulation etc. The only thing we are not already doing to save energy is to have a windmill on our roof (we do however have a solar panel for the hot water). When is it going to end?? :-S

The server runs on gas.

You have to put another £1 coin in the DVD slot in your 'puter before the server will light up again for you.

Just been informed by the wife that we too have a capped tariff for the next 18 months, but still can't get over how such an increase can be allowed, and this on top of all the smaller rises over recent months.

If gas/elec were luxuries then just possibly you might tighten your belt and get on with it, but heating and lighting is such a basic necessity that it beggers belief they can get away with it.

Already cut back as much as we can, but the hardest hit will once again be those on a limited income and OAP's, and if this is allowed, and even more die through hyperthermia this winter, then we forfeit the right to call ourselves a civilised country.

That is why nobody is bleating on about "Global warming" anymore - Remember how only a few months ago you could not turn on the BBC news without seeing a picture of an Ice block falling into the sea. Polar bears falling off their lickle ice rafts and penguins suffering from sunstroke.

If we do get a few more degrees warmer then we should not need to use so much energy to keep us warm.

You see!!!!!

Every cloud has its silver lining.

Well, (place hard hat on) the truth is we have been living in a 'fools paradise' for years now with our cheap home grown North Sea gas, now the 'chickens have come home to roost' and we are having to pay market rates.

When NSG was first disvcovered there was sufficient for more than 140 years if the gas was used as a 'prime' fuel as it was designated under the existing 'Energy Policy'.

We are now seeing the results of Margeret Thatcher tearing up the Energy Policy to break the miners and the subsequent inaction by those in power after to not reintroduce it so that they could pretend we had never had it so good.

Compare our situation to Norway who actually have had a coherent policy on oil and gas to benefit the whole of their comunity not just those that already had money could make more.

Our resources have been squandered by succesive governments for their own, and the people who control finance's ends.

Whilst the increases seem savage, unfortunately this is part of the pain we are going to have to go through to get back to realism.

As an example, by keeping prices low you can pay less to old age pensioners as they don't need it and thus you can keep tax for the better off down!! Already it has been anounced that 'Winter Fuel Payment' is to be increased, but again this only allows them to not pay proper realistic pensions.

We are all living in one BIG lie concocted by politicians.
