Auxillary electrical feed

Hi,

I am fitting an electric step to a x250 fiat Swift and need to connect the warning buzzer to the auxillary supply from the ignition switch.

Where is the easiest/simplest place to connect into this feed?

Many thanks,

Probably directly at the ignition switch via a fuse.

If you cannot work this out for yourself then perhaps you should be using a qualified vehicle electrician. Safety first.

Don't know on the X250, but on earlier Boxers and on most vehicles the best place to take a feed from is the fuse box. Generally you can find an unused fuse that is live only on turning the ignition to the auxilery position and use that (e.g. unused air conditioning fuse position) you just need to ensure that if it is an unused high rated fuse you down rate it to a suitable rating by replacing the existing fuse.

Why not take it from the fridge?

Dave, only thing with that is if the fridge is correctly wired its relay should only switch with the engine running i.e. from the alternator, all our cars (for caravans) and our motorhome is wired this way. Whilst that may do a job that would not be from the auxilery on the ignition switch as requested.

It's only the buzzer, Bas, not the step.  Ignition on, start engine, step out, warning buzzer.  Step not out, no problem, no warning buzzer.

I accept your point totally, it was just that the origional post specifically asked about the auxilery supply, but yes you are correct it will operate as you said.

Thanks for all your replies.

I have spent several hours this afternoon looking at the possibilities and the fridge take off seems to be the one to go for.

The fusebox has two unused fuses but you cannot connect to these as the "fuse holders" are hard wired to a printed circuit board. Multipin connectors, micro-relays and even a computer "chip"are attached to this.

This is not a fusebox as I used to know it!

The ignition switch option did not have a free contact and I did not feel happy tapping into the existing circuit as it feeds the instruments.

The fridge connector has a free terminal on the board so all I have to do is find the correct terminal to go into the multipin socket.....

Best wishes,

Just a quick update.

The feed for the cigarette lighter and "power outlet" has provided the easiest pickup point without cutting any wires.

Remove the black "pot" on the dashboard;

Take out the black rubber mat from the base of the holder;

Undo the screw now visible;

The plastic moulding holding the cigarette lighter and switch panel can now be gently worked free, giving access to the unit.

The yellow wire can be detached from the multiplug and a simple link-in cable made up to give an extra feed. This also lets you return the wiring to the original state if ever needed.
