Porky Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 We intend to go to Spain for the winter leaving the UK early September 2009 in our Autotrail Tracker EKS. I have not done so by road before and I am unsure which side to go, Biarritz or Perpignon? Also we don`t want to rush down but we don`t want to catch any bad weather either. Anyone had any experience they could share. Cheers.
Mel E Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 We always go Biarritz - Vitoria/Gasteiz - Burgos - Madrid - Granada or Malaga. The easterly route is mostly Peaje (TOLL) wheras that above has only a little toll road in the north. The easterly route also seems much more prone to theft attack. There are also some nice deviations from this route - south of Burgos, north of Madrid to Segovia, south to Toledo and so on. Get a good guide book (Rough Guide, Lonely Planet or Dorling Kindersley) - it is an essential investment for this sort of motorhoming and planning what you'll do is half the fun! Mel E ====

sooty10 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 We do the journey to the Costa Del Sol each winter and go to Biaritz then either Burgos or head to Pamplona, logorno, Soria then down the A2 to Madrid. Then down to Granada and straight down to Malaga. You should not have any weather problems before November and even then the roads are kept well clear. The only times we have seen snow has been in January around Madrid. If you are going past Malaga to Gib then you should keep off the toll roads. They cost plenty and only save a few minutes. Almost forgot to say that you should spend some time in France as it has some great places to visit on your journey. We head for the coast south of Bordeaux and you will find some great aires to spend some time and break your journey down. Hope you have a great winter in the sun. Sooty10

Sooty10 We went down to Estepona on about 6th November 4/5 years ago by car and left on a sunny thursday afternoon in France and stopped at a hotel in Burgos for the night and woke up the following morning to 4 inches of snow. We have never seen as many snow ploughs as we saw then, they were on every roundabout on the motorway, keeping it clear. That year the weather was horrendous and when we got to Malaga people were queing up at the Corte del Ingles store waiting for it to open to buy top coats, you don't normally need these at that time of year, thankfully it didn't last but its something we will never forget.
Porky Posted August 1, 2008 Author Posted August 1, 2008 Thanks for the info, I think my favoured way down is via Loire and the west of France and the initial response seems to confirm that. Regards Porky
