Invertor Problems

I have a 400Watt,12V to 230V invertor, which I use in my Autosleeper Trident. When I plug it into the cigarette lighter socket in the cab with measured output 12.55volts DC it works OK. However, when I plug it into the 12v socket in the habitation area (measured output 12.85volts DC) the unit lights up (blinking) and the fan starts but the invertor doesn't kick in.

Anyone got any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

Hi,Two berth,

Welcome to the forum

Check the polarity on your habitation socket, our problem could be that it is reversed polarity, or the wiring to your socket is to light causing a voltage drop. Your cig lighter/ aux socket is really not suitable for a 400w inverter you will be drawing at least 33amps on full load. Your inverter would be best wired direct to your leasure battery via a 50Amp fuse using heavy duty 100A cables keeping them as short as possible. you can then use a standard 13a 240v extension lead and socket, conveniently placed for your mains output. regards Geoff

Thanks Geoff for a quick reply.

The polarity is not reversed according to my multimeter, so I think it must be the voltage drop across the thin wiring. I take on board your sound advice, and as I will be buying a new leisure battery soon, I will take that opportunity to wire the invertor in using the cables you suggest.

Best regards to all
