camper tv aeriel

Hi Kev and welcome to the forum. A small TV aerial that will give good reception in all areas just does not exist I'm afraid. Your choice is a small compact aerial that will work in strong signal areas, a roof mounted directional aerial such as the Status 530/5 or 530/10 which will work in slighlty weaker signal areas or a good quality ten (or more) element external aerial mounted on a collapsible pole that will work in most areas.

Its a three way consideration between performance, cost and convenience. The mid performer (Status 530) is the most convenient but also the most expensive, the best performer (external multi element on a pole) is the mid priced one but the least convenient and the cheapest (compact) is the poorest with middle ground on convenience.

Hi Kev,

I sometimes use the Magic Circle active TV/FM aerial to receive terrestrial stations both analogue and digital, the aerial is now over twenty five years old ! While I agree with Dave a good outdoor antenna is the best buy, even those can be subjected to poor reception i.e. receiving reflected signals, in analogue reception you get ghosting and sometimes digital signals cannot be resolved and displayed because of it.

The Magic Circle is a directional aerial and can be used to reduce or stop reflected signals by rotating it. I have fitted an extension lead to it and it can be placed on the camper roof, a plastic bag waterproofs it when raining, see link http://tinyurl.com/5cflls is a good addition to your collection.

My main TV reception is by a 12 volt Sky box and Multimo dish link http://tinyurl.com/5wkrg4 or by Maplin Box similar to link http://tinyurl.com/6jn8mo

My wife and I never miss an episode of many soaps, no matter where we are in Europe, sad isn’t it? – that little Multimo I place on the roof when stopped and it fits under a sofa locker when on the move, so no expensive installation and can be setup faster than a pole and a spiky as in link http://tinyurl.com/5pa6f9 .

Regards Terry

Recently bought a Philex SLXa set top aerial from Argos (Cat No 534/4204) for £9.99 after seeing it recommended in (I think) the CC Magazine.

haven't tried it in the van yet but at home it is a major improvement on my old portable ones. It need to be connected to the mains to amplify the signal

After many years of trying, and mainly failing, to get a decent terrestrial TV signal when I go camping I gave up last year.

I purchased a Lidl satellite system, all in one case and not to large. (Have a search on here there is a lot about it).

It is excellent, good signal even in the bottom of a Welsh valley (and you don't have to speak Welsh!). Most of the common channels are on Astra 28.2 Freesat and are FTA (Free to Air). A bonus is you get lots of radio channels as well.

Once you get the hang of it you can get a signal in a couple of minutes.
