Dogs in Spain

We are intending to travel to Spain in September and although initially were going to explore Northern Spain have had an invitation to visit the Malaga region at the beginning of September. However we have a 3 year old Border Collie and wondered whether it would be too hot for him at this time. We would be grateful for any info on this. Many thanks.

Hi Wendy havent been to Spain but we have just come back from Germany a nd France with our 2 year old Chihuahua, it was very hot and he spent a lot of the time under the van we kept wetting him down and putting the fan on for him but he was alright. Just something you might want to check on We bought a Scallibor coller for Teddy as one of the girls had recommended them they protect against the sand flies that can carry a leisamania infection that can make your dog very ill, we didnt need to use it as the only time we were near sand was when we returned to Calais but I thought it was better to be prepared, I think that if you google it you might find that you could need one where you are going. It should start cooling down by September, most Brits who have places over in Spain come home from late June early July until September to miss the heat and return in September.

Have seen dogs there in September and though it is quiet warm they seemed to be comfortable enough

We live in Malaga and have three dogs 1 Cairn and 2 Irish Setters.

Dogs just like us feel the heat which is hotest July/Aug thye are also sensible and look for cool shadey places a few tips

1 Always make sure they have plenty of fresh water

2 Make sure there is plenty of shade for them

3 Don't excersise them in the heat of the day once the dog overheats it takes some time for them to cool down

4 Walk them early morning (best)or after the sun has gone down but that can still be hot.

5 Don't worry if they are lethargic there just like you in the heat

6 September is so much cooler than August

7 Have their coats trimmed and thinned.

I don't have the luxury of a second home in the UK, but the last thing Iwould do is leave these endless hot days to return to the 'British Summer'

Many thanks for replies - think we will go ahead - beauty of motorhome is we can move back to cooler parts if needed. Re collar - we have heard about danger from sandflies from our vet and have purchased a collar - our dog loves the beach and water. Are beaches dog friendly in southern Spain - we took him through France, Black Forest and Switzerland May to July and he had a brilliant time - swam in mountain lakes, rivers and the sea.

Most beaches no dogs May to September and some not at all look for the signs or check with the local town hall fines can be stiff also make sure you have the dog passport with you,you can be asked to produce.

I don't know about where you are, but up here in Valencia, if you can get to the quieter beaches between the towns, you won't find the restrictions.

Dogs? Spain? September?

Some thoughts, as we've lived here on the Costa Blanca for the past 6 years:

There are millions of dogs living happily in Spain.

Malaga region is on the coast, so is cooler than most inland parts of southern/central Spain. There's normally more breeze too on the coasts

The killer months here are July and August....as I write this, it's 38 degrees here today.

You just need your pet passport, all the normal jabs, and plenty of shade and water.

There's one other thing you MUST do, and that is make your collie wear an anti-Leishmaniosis collar.

Available from any pet shop, or on-line.

Cost is a few pounds, they remain effective for about 3 or 4 months.

They protect against the dog contracting Leishmania, a desease carried by sand flies here, which live on/around beach zones, and which bite dogs.

This desease is a BIG dog killer over here.

There's anothert thread on this subject if you do a search of the site for more info.
