Am getting adventurous now by starting a new thread, does anyone out there use a C B radio in their van? is there any call for them or are they only used by truckers? I had one in my first van and found it very useful in road hold-ups, the van I have got now (V W type4 TD) does not have a suitable place to fit it, anyone with any thoughts on the matter?

Used CB's in the 80's and early 90's as a truck driver, they were both usful for getting directions, finding out about traffic problems or just making new friends.

Would put one in van tomorrow if Angie gave me a chance lol

As we always travel down the southwest through the night a CB was a boon talking to and winding up the truckers.

One particular time just as we were approaching the turn off for Cheddar Gorge a trucker who thought I was a trucker asked me what I was carrying and where was I bound for, I told him I was carrying 40 tons of black puddings and I was making a delivery to the gorge to which he said no way, you wont get a truck down there.

Some of the wind-ups were fierce, when a trucker came on asking for a copy I would say "you sound like a nice boy" whats your name sailor ha ha, my handle at the time was Greengrass, happy times in the dead of night.

No room above the sun visor due to a cupboard being there, was thinking of making some kind of cradle to fit on top of the dash succured by double sided tape or some such thing and powering the unit from the ciggy lighter.

Would have to get the coax cable out to a side mounted magmount and use a pretuned twig, thats my way of thinking, what do you think??

Dont think there is anything worse than being stuck in a long tail back not knowing what the problem is, with a CB rig you can find out from truckers further up the line, when you know what the problem is you can relax and chill out and enjoy the view at 2 MPH.

Got stuck in a huge tail back some months ago heading north on the M5 near Frankley services when a truck shed its load of plasterboard closing all but one lane.

My cousin Johnnie travels behind me in his campervan and we keep in touch using walkie-talkies which are very handy at times.

Clive, or any of you CBers can you remember, Winchester based Red Barron. He was Ace at helping people on holdups etc. Sadly no longer with us, Also another trucker from Cornwall, delivering to London at night,

He was a character, shame on me I have forgotten his name now. Happy days, they were, Wind ups as well, Ria,

I PM'd Clive and asked him to get his butt over to this thread but to no avail ... I suspect he's already on his way to Malvern so you'll have to track him down in his gazebo! :-D

Thanks Mel, Yes we had great fun when we had CB's, I got to know many lovely people as you do on here, I had one in the car and a homebase set as well, Gave up using the one in the car, nearly hit a bridge

so only used it stationary, Hope you get your computer sorted out, that is bad news, My son used to store a lot of info on his, so I quess he would

understand what you are going through, Ta again, Ria.

A friend of mine had a CB radio some years ago and we went out in his car to try it out .I was dismayed to hear the foul language and purile chat on i t also some idiot thought it fun to broadcast his choice of music for hours on end. I would still quite like to have one in my Camper van though but I doubt there's been much change in the quality of CB content over the years. *-) *-)

They are still used nowadays, but they are very quiet! No where near as busy as when i was young! They were our version of a mobile phone really!

Off roaders still use them as do the truckers, and they have a use if touring regularly as you can avoid all manor of motorway hold ups well before you hear it on the radio. Which generally is always just as you join the queue!

Good thing is, they dont need a licence any more and cost as little as £40!!

Now that the younger element are into their mobile phones and other gizmo's I reckon a CB rig would be a good investment to fit in ones camper.

Very handy for road information and of course having a laugh with serious CB users on those long night rides.

Thankyou! Thats our company name! We run a motorhome hire company and thought the name 'Rainbow Chasers' sort of embodied the whole motorhome idea of an endless adventure with no real destination!

In the late 70s i used to run a CB club for am breakers before the silly fm came in, it was called "The Welly Boot Breakers". fm flooded the market & in the end we had to go with it but the wind ups well for us in Stockport are legendary my handle was Ballerina baby to name a few & boy didn't i wind up those hairy armed truckers who hogged the breaking channel. The club we used to meet in was the Wellington Club in Heaton Norris on a Thursday night & was full to capacity by 9pm & boy did we have some fun, not like today. I would put mine in my car tomorrow but for the missus

Hi,

Way back in the 1980s (?) we were visiting friends who were into CB. My wife wound up all the local breakers by pretending to be a visitor from France.......until somebody commented that she was speaking French with a Welsh accent.

She doesn't have a Welsh accent!

Similarly, a Sec of State was visiting DVLC and wanted to listen in to Drivers Enquiries. It was a quiet day, so staff were asked to phone in some queries. The S of S soon cottoned on that everybody who had a driving licence problem ..... also had a Welsh accent.

I think that when CB became legal in this country most of us thought that we were going to have a system similar to that that is depicted on the TV and cinema in use in America .

Does it work as well as it is shown to?

I have to agree with this posting, what killed it for me was the language and crudeness that was used , it was not that you would want to listen to

all the time you were in your car, especially with young children present.

In addition there was no discipline amongst the users. I know that the code of use was voluntary but only braking on one channel and using Channel 9 as an emergency channel (in my area) seemed pretty basic, but some seemed not to want to comply.

Frustrated Disc jockeys were common, driving around Birmingham there was one user who insisted on using channel 9 to play music all the time. Requests from truckers on the motorway to "clear the emergency channel "were completely ignored. I understand this is against the CB regulations but I never heard of anyone being prosecuted??? What did we get for our £10.

In my opinion the FM system never attracted the serious AM CBer because of the low power and lack of range, and it was the poorer for it.

A pity FM CB got off to such a bad start.

Have things improved?

Just my thoughts, I expect others feel diferently.

Hi again,

Just found his thread again while sat in a hotel in Newquay. Soon we will be free of mother-in-law duties and back motorhoming!

Yes we knew the Red Baron in Winchester and have met him. Lovely tall chap lived near the top of the hill.

Does anybody remember that Speedy Lady in Basingstoke or day Dripper in Reading?

The plan for the VW will certainly get you "on air"

CB's I remember them well. Broke up many a marriage, including mine. Good old days or bad? We had some fun though and a lot of money was raised for charity. We walked from Great Yarmouth to Swaffham in norfolk for the guide dogs. Long haul but good fun. Memories

10 10 til we do it again........Sweet Pea X
