chatterdog Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I see its that time of year when the councils want confirmation of our where abouts, then they like to sell that info to any third parties willing to buy, but just incase any of you havent noticed it there is a box to tick, and if it is ticked they cant sell your details onto any third party.Headed 'Persons not wishing to appear on the edited register.'

Just to give a bit more background to this. Until a few years ago there was no Edited Register and councils had no choice but to supply the full register to anyone who wanted it for far less than it was worth (i.e. your council tax subsidised the companies obtaining the data). When the law changed to bring in the Edited Register it also enabled councils to obtain an economic fee for the information to stop companies free-loading on the council tax. Councils don't market the Edited Register but they have no choice but to sell copies if companies want them. I would always urge people to tick the box so that they don't appear on the Edited Register - as a former council Data Protection Officer I always do. Graham
