New Fiat Engines

Grateful for some opinions on whether the new Fiat 130JTD 2.3 will pull a Compact Motorhome 3300Kgs with reasonable gusto particularily on long contiental trips. I currently own a 3800Kg 03 van with the 2.8JTD.

It pulls my 4 ton Autotrail Cheyenne no problem. On the motorway I just set the cruise control at 65 and away we go! Only problem is when you come across lane 2 being blocked by trucks, tuggers or people who still think they should just drive in lane 2 regardless of their speed!

I had the Peugeot Boxer 100HDi last year and toured France & Spain and again the vehicle was a dream to drive. That van weighed in at 3.3 tonnes and we were full, or there abouts for most of the trip.

We even had/have no problem in reverse!!

the new fiat will pull all day long up motorway hills in fifth gear /mine is the five gear version / and will travel at 80 to 90 no problem with full water tanks and wife's clothes and shoes on board

The engine is fantastic but don't buy one until the reversing problem is sorted out - see the main thread for the latest info.

Peugeot have now admitted that the reverse gear ratio is too high and that all Sevel vehicles will be fitted with a modified gearbox from January next year. Peugoet are also going to retro-fit a lower ratio reverse gear - unlike Fiat, who are still ignoring their customers.

Those who say there is no problem are either deluding themselves or haven't tried reversing up a steep hill. Especially with the 2. 3 litre versions.

The problem is finding out when these 'new' versions are going to be in in the motorhome food chain. It could be as long as September next year.

I have a ford with 2.2 130 bhp (same engine *-) ) and it pulls our fully loaded high top like a train... go try one. a vast improvement over 2.8 Fiat lump which I found agricultural in comparison.

Our motorhome Autotrail Cheynne 660 uses the 2.3 engine, excellent pulling power and economy 27.6 mpg (measured at fill ups), still with only 1600 miles on the clock, hopefully we will see further improvements with increased mileage.

HOWEVER, we too have the transmission problem, we could not reverse onto a grass pitch with a slight gradient without using 2500 to 3000 rpm (smoking/burning clutch) and the help of the caravan club wardens. The next day the wardens allocated us a flat hardstanding, even then we experienced the transmission problems. I would STONGLY RECOMMEND you listen to Andy advice and hang fire.

OH says this comparison is exactly how he feels - couldn't have put it better.... ( our last MH was a 2.8 Fiat) ;-)
