We have just aquired a sat reciever / dish etc from fellow camper but it is 230v. Our tv is currently mains but we are changing it to 12v as we have done previously.( or both if we can fine another plug correct size !) We do wild camp & cl a lot so apart fron genny we will be self sufficient on leisure batteries.

Is there a way of changing reciever to 12v apart from inverter route?and if not what size inverter do you reccomend & are they as bad as people say for using battery life ?

Back of rec says 230v ^ 0.3a 50hz 60w max. at power input socket

Digital inteface 5v dc 600ma max 3v3 dc 1.2a Whatever all that means !!

Hubby is quite good with electrical bits so would just like any ideas please, then i can pass on to him. Thanks.

Inverters vary as to their efficiency but even the best are going to lose some power during the electronic process. You might get maybe 80% efficiency if you are lucky, that means 20% is given off as heat.

There are no ways to run the TV etc. direct from 12v, certainly most of the circuits inside will be running at low voltage DC, but unless the manufacturer has provided a 12v input and taken care of supplying the right voltages to the various circuits it just can't be done.

If you buy an inverter buy a good one with plenty of spare capacity, if you want to run, say, 100w off it then get one that will handle at least 150W, it will run cooler and last longer.

So, you are stuck with an inverter unless you buy a 12v setup.

You might consider a seperate TV only battery, switched to charge when on the move, and when it's run down then it's no more TV for a bit!

That leaves you main habitation battery for all the usual things unaffected.
