Non site Camping Throughout Europe

On our European travels we find that it is generally the Germans and Dutch who seem know exactly where to head for and where the best places are for a night or two's responsible off site unofficial freebie.

It was particularly evident in Sweden and Norway where responsible off site camping is generally allowed and we sometimes just began looking for a van or two parked up somewhere discreet rather than look for our own locations to stop. When we found them it was always German and/or Dutch vans.

I wonder how they seem to know in advance where to head for?

Is there a website in German or Dutch maybe where they learn of such locations as all those that I have seen in English don't list many of the lovely places that we stopped at?

Aires and Stellplatz are well documented in France and Germany which makes it such a joy to travel these countries without need to back track to a site or book ahead or look for a full facility site.

Does anyone understand enough of either language and have the time and inclination to search Google for them?

We have travelled throughout Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark and have noticed the same 'birds of a feather flock together' phenomena that you have. In Norway especially, the majority of Motorvans are German and we have wondered ourselves if there was a stellplatz book listing all the good ones.

If there is such a book, I do not know of it, although it may well form a section in a 'normal' German stellplatz guide, in the same way that our French Aire book has listings for other countries apart from France.

In the meantime, have you looked at:

http://campingcompass.com/aires/norway

and: http://campingcompass.com/aires (for the rest of Europe).

I have had a quick look round the German language version of Google at: http://www.google.de/ but not been able to find any better free listings than those in the campingcompass site above.

Off to France / Spain etc next saturday ..... Michael

While the "compass" site is useful and thanks for the link, it seems a bit spa**e...for instance Belgium. It mentions one in Adegem, but nearby is a very nice Aire at Eeklo on a canel and there is no mention of it.

There is another at the sports centre in Maldegem that I know of but have not visited. Furtermore no mention of the popular but expensive one in Brugge......

why the word "spa**e" has been interpreted (automatically) as a forbidden word is beyond me *-)

And again!! S P A R S E is not a naughty word in my dictionary any way.

It is irrelevant to Tracker's original query, but how do you think the swear filter / moderator would react to discussion concerning the village shown in this link?

Just in case the swear filter does not allow the link to display properly it is:

http://www. f u c k i n g/f u c k i n g/eOrt.htm and belive it or not, it is not in the slightest bit rude.

Hi Rich,

This site http://www.lapaca.org/areas/espana.php lists aires in Spain, not many yet but I think the Spanish are getting the message.

This site http://home.arcor.de/telbus/womo-sp/ReadMe-1st_engl.html lists aires/Stellplatz/Sostas in Europe it takes some working out but it does have the GPS co ords which mostt folks want/need these days.

Regards

Don

Michael, you are a naughty boy!

I have no problem with any thread that I start going off topic as this is the way that normal conversations between friends come and go from point to point whilst various ideas are inputed (is that a real word?) and aired.

Many thanks for the links folks - I'll go and have a quick looksee drekkly.

10 minutes later!

Had a quick looksee and the womo site has quite a list - now if I can find a way of getting those lists of all the unknown countries into excel where I can edit out the campsites we will be really motoring!

When i worked a Mr ki####g cakes, we had a bloke who deliverd to a little village in shropshire called knocking, and our office girls wouldn't make a bradna plate addresed to the knocking shop even though he had hand written an invoice for them for over five years.
