You will need a freeview external aerial to use the TV in the UK? it should work fine.

Then a satellite dish with a sat receiver to use in Europe...This can be a simple portable kit from Maplins/alde/lidl for approx £60. Or a dish on your vans roof – these can cost £400 for a manual dish or up to £2000 for an automatic system.

Hi There

just been looking on the web for an Oyster satellite dish automatic and fitted price, best deal was £1700. star electronics.

I said I would treat my tele addict hubby to one, before I found out the price !!

Still I suppose you get what you pay for in the end.

Regards

Kate

Depends WHERE IN SPAIN. You will not get a satellite signal in southern Spain for BBC/ITV since they use a satellite with transponders that only give a footprint over the UK and northern France. To catch the preriphery of this signal in on the Costa del Sol requires a very large dish.

Hi,

Oyster is one of several dish suppliers. There is also alden from Framce. Oyster is one of the dearest dishes. ( sounds like a food menu doesn,t it )

Telco cheap as chips and just as good

You will only get sky news channel 5 and the radio channels in southern spain on the southern transponder.

You need a static 1.2 mtr dish to get bbc1 etc

I have noticed that some spainish sites have satellite sockets on the individual pitches, this seems to catching on. May be worth checking were you are going.....

Would you care to share with us where these sites are? Are there any for example between Barcelona and the Costa Blanca.

I know of a couple in Benidorm but that's it. When wintering away I need my TV fix and watching Hotbird channels through my satellite dish/digibox is not my thing.

Thanks.

If you have a Sky box with a viewing card there are some ITV1 channels available with a small dish all over Spain.

I get the UK footprint OK with a 65cm Maxview Crank-up all over France, Andorra and NW and NE Spain.

The hardest place to get a signal in Spain is the Costa Blanca. It gets easier further south in Costa del Sol.

Can’t really help with specifics, as from time to time I click on links on here to suitable sites to winter in Spain, and notice some have sat on pitches....But as I am a bit of a way from retirement I don’t save these.

Suggest you just look at facilities of sites in areas of interest. John and sandy white are in the Benidorm area and that site has sat.....try a PM they may know of more

The Gardia in Spain have just closed down the Sat companies for illegally re - transmitting sky via terestrial arials. A friend of mine who lives there says there are thousands who cannot get a picture and there is a huge waiting list for sat installation.

The only way you will get sky now is through your own dish or if the site has a dish.

Good job too!! I'm amazed at the number of Brits in the 'enclaves' who are happy to receive stolen goods.

Hello trickydicky, won`t ask what lurks behind the name. I am in a similar position, but not yet in possession of my steed. My research has been greatly helped by RoadPro. They have produced a very useful booklet on the subject. They can be found on www.roadpro.co.uk. I have virtually decided on the Kathrein CAP 900. There have also been other previous threads on this subject if you check back.

Certainly keeping up with news is useful, but don`t get too excited about getting reception in the south of Spain. We used to have a property near Nerja about 20 mins inland and had to have a 1.5 m dish to get reception!!!! Watching Spanish TV is a good way to improve your Spanish, a smattering of which will always get you good service and a smile.

We have an Oyster system on the motorhome and depending where you are in Spain you may have to adjust the scew on the dish (the blob on the arm) - apparently not a technical thing to do - from the UK position of 7 oclock to either (you can tell I'm not the one that does it!) 8 o'clock or 6o'clock. Hope that's of help.

May I be devil's advocate? I've been following these Portugal Spain satellite threads as we hope to be off soon and I followed a link to

http://www.conrad-anderson.co.uk/mobilesatellitetelevision/oyster_samY.htm

which suggests v.good reception with a 65cm dish in Portugal. So is your experience older (worse) than the soopa doopa samY or are conrad anderson talking ball cocks. We don't have a dish yet and I need to buy one before the off. The truth is I quite like the idea of listening to the machinations of david & ruth archer while sipping a large glass of port so how big do I need to go? Conrad anderson 65cm or Mel E BIG

Mel E is quite correct, in southern Spain you need a huge dish to receive BBC/ITV. You can pick up some UK channels with a 65CM dish down there I believe but whether they are what you want to watch I can't say.

Check out Roadpro's website for more details of what is available where, Andy Harris (MD of Roadpro) has been all over Europe trying out their systems so when they say X system will receive Y channels they are talking from personal experience.
