Tunnel parking Rip-Off

Beware all who travel via the Tunnel.

There is a new stop-over at J11 of the M20 just before the Tunnel exit. It is signed up as Tunnel Early Arrivals stop-over. The services and cafe areas are fine, but if you want to stop overnight for an early morning crossing it is £20 per night with NO campsite facilities. You also have to park in the Bus area at the moment. You get your ticket from the very officious security guard whose office is at the Lorry Park on the left as you enter the site. Failure to pay, will result in a £100 fine (I believe).

There must be cheaper parking places in the area.

Needless to say, we did not stop at the one mentioned above.

Just another example of Rip Off parking in this country I thought Peterborough Services where bad enough at £14.75! I think it was for overnight stop. Is it anywonder there are accidents when you are forced to drive for hours before you can stop anywhere.

I think we should write to the Govenment complaining and telling them that overseas visiters are put off coming here because of this meanness.

Agreed, a motion should be raised so that the government gets its fingers out here. Let's get a petition going. We are way behind with respect to the continent and if they were as sincere as they are supposed to be with road safety (or is it only revenue raising speed traps) they would take note and get far more laybyes and parking offroad spots organised. Motorway Service stopover charges are a joke >:-(

There are simple answers to the 'Tunnel stopover' problem.

1. Organise your crossing times appropriately.

2. Get into France (or leave France) at a time to have your break over there.

3. Use an 'aire', the harbour side in Calais if you use a motorhome or the departure car park on the dock at Calais if you tow a caravan.

4. Thumb your nose to greedy British operators!

I've been using the Calais dock park for both outward and inward trips for years. There are even showers in the departure building if you know where to find them. (Through the right hand door when looking at the front and follow the signs.)

That's also a good reason to use the ferry instead of the tunnel which is always far too expensive for us any way.

I always use the Caravan Club site at Black Horse Farm, Folkestone, before driving the few minutes to the Tunnel Terminal, or just a bit further to the Dover ferry port. There is a dedicated area for "early risers" which negates the need for disturbing other campers in the early hours. As would be expected for a club site, the facilities are excellent so you can start your journey well refreshed. (Also open to non-members so you don't have to join!). Well worth the cost in my opinion which is far less anyway than the service area and much more pleasant. (lol)
